Someone made a serious mistake with the Jan NPD top ten (and it's not the error you're thinking of)

So, here is the NPD Jan top Ten.

WII FIT (WII) 777K
WII PLAY W/ REMOTE (WII) 415K
MARIO KART W/WHEEL (WII) 292K
LEFT 4 DEAD (360) 243K
CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR* (360) 235K
SKATE 2 (360) 199K
GUITAR HERO WORLD TOUR* (WII) 155K
NEW SUPER MARIO BROS (DS) 135K
MARIO KART DS (DS )132K
LORD OF THE RINGS: CONQUEST (360) 113K

Now, from the MS press release.

Xbox 360 games claimed five spots in the January top 10, including "Left
4 Dead," "Call of Duty: World at War," "Skate 2," "Lord of the Rings:
Conquest," and "Gears of War 2" (January NPD data).

Now, from the Nintendo press release

Of those, five games made for Nintendo systems finished in the top 10 best-sellers of January. These games include Wii Fit™ at No. 1 with more than 777,000 sold, Wii Play™ at No. 2 with nearly 415,000 sold, Mario Kart™ Wii at No. 3 with more than 292,000 sold, New Super Mario Bros. for Nintendo DS at No. 7 with nearly 135,000 sold, and Mario Kart™ DS at No. 8 with more than 132,000 sold.

The top Ten list NPD released has SIX Nintendo games in it. Nintendo mentioned they had five, and MS mentioned they had five.

I think GH World Tour Wii is a mistake, and it should be Gears of War 2.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

Good catch.

I think the full lists NPD provides to companies has different SKUs listed separately. That would cause something like GHWT to take up multiple slots, but those slots would be outside the top 10. GoW2 could then make the top 10.

At least, that's my best guess for it. There were mistakes in the NPD list this month, so who knows. (Mario Kart DS was listed for the 360 instead of the DS; Lord of the Rings: Conquest was listed for the PS3 instead of the 360.)

blizzid must be right.

If tyrannical was correct and they merely misspelled Gears 2 as "guitar hero" then Ninty would have claimed NSMB as 8th and MK:DS as 9th. However, because they claimed them as 7th and 8th, GH must have been removed completely in the version they saw, bumping up G2 from 11th to 10th

That doesn't make any sense. No game is on the top ten list accross multiple platforms, so combining platform sales would not put Gears on the list.

Hmmm, further evidence that something is not right with the NPD top ten list. We're just not sure what exactly it is.

Maybe the GH Wii entry should be removed completely, and Gears of War 2 would be at #10. That would at least put the MS/Nintendo press release in agreement.

Tyrannical - in the version we see, GH-WT:Wii is counted as one game, GH-WT:360 as another.

In the version that MS and Ninty see, GH-WT:Wii - game only version is one game, GH-WT:Wii - Guitar version is a 2nd game and GH-WT:Wii - Full band version is a 3rd.

So the version MS and Ninty saw would have looked like

WII FIT (WII) 777K
WII PLAY W/ REMOTE (WII) 415K
MARIO KART W/WHEEL (WII) 292K
LEFT 4 DEAD (360) 243K
CALL OF DUTY: WORLD AT WAR* (360) 235K
SKATE 2 (360) 199K
NEW SUPER MARIO BROS (DS) 135K
MARIO KART DS (DS )132K
LORD OF THE RINGS: CONQUEST (360) 113K
Gears of war 2 (360)

You're not understanding my post. I'm not talking about combining sales across multiple platforms, I'm talking about combining multiple SKUs for the same platform. The top 10 list we have from GAF does do this; it says so right in the source post. (GHWT has three separate SKUs: game-only, guitar bundle, and full band bundle.)

Ok, I see your point with GH and multiple SKUs of it all on the Wii.

But the list GAF has should be the same one all the press releases are commenting upon. I don't recall multiple versions on the top ten list before.

Why would Nintendo be mistaken? As I see it, 5 games they published are on that list. GH isn't their game, so they don't count it. And if the list were looked at in terms of combined sales, who is to say that GeoW doesn't make the top ten? As far as I can see, there aren't any mistakes here, just some creative interpretations on the parts of MS and a few VGChartz users.
