Best series.... to you.
Game developers i'd guess would lean towards Half Life if the Game developers awards are any indication.
According to them, best game of 2008 was Portal, and the best Story in a game was Bioshock. Though I don't know how they actually come across this and what devs they poll.
I'm not the only one. Just like you aren't, even though you're in the majority.

Ah, but i have a majority opinion, backed up by said people in their trade.
When someone says Citizen Kane is a better movie the Biodome, it generally doesn't have to be expressed as an opinion, because it's the mainstream opinion.
Now should someone say Biodome is a better movie then Citizen Kane. You best believe they better preface that as an opinion.
(Not that Kojima is the Biodome of developers. Just an easy example.)

Just because you have a Majority opinion does mean that you have the right to say it without clearly stating it as opinion. How someone Influences are seen in this world , differs from person to person. For example, As their a Majority of Catholics in Ireland, does that mean that if they say their religion is superior, give them the right to pass it off as fact? (Even though religion Is not based on facts)

On what basis would this be judged?
Would there be many unbiased third party people to judge this as so? (As is the case with developers, and movies.)
Greatness of a religion is a very hard thing to judge.
Greatness of a developer. Not really. It's easy to see how the developers have impacted and influenced their art.
For example, see Mario Brothers, and notice how nearly every 2-D platform game was trying to emulate Super Mario Brothers.
Or Will Wright, who invented entire genres.
VS a guy who makes one series... that has had little impact on the rest of the gaming community on the whole?
