I have seen a lot of posts about core games, core gamers and the Wii. From what I have seen it is pretty clear that most people, especially the Wii crowd, have no idea what a core game or gamer actually is. I agree with the people that say that "core" games on the Wii will not sell the same amount as they will on the 360 and PS3. I can't even believe that anyone would try to say they would. First off, the Nintendo franchise games are no longer core games, I repeat, the Nintendo franchise games are no longer core games. This is simply due to the fact that those games are not what they used to be. Nintendo has made big changes that has taken away their right to be called core games. They have made them too accessible to any "non-gamer" and has made them way too easy and the controls way too different.
A core game example is Halo 3, even though I am not a huge Halo fan I still understand why the core gamers like it and I still play it sometimes. SMG is not a core game. And before you ask I owned and played SMG, and MP3, and Zelda: TP, and most of all the Nintendo made games for the Wii before I sold it for my PS3. The reason I sold it? Nintendo let me down, plain and simple. I have owned EVERY Nintendo system ever made. However, Nintendo is not the same company it was 20 years ago, 15 years ago, 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago. Nintendo, led by idiots like Fils-Aime, has changed the entire way the company does business.
Nintendo is no longer on the cutting edge in the video game world. The previous Nintendo systems were revolutionary and they always tried to make them with the newest and best hardware possible in order to stay ahead in the industry and make the best games. The Wii has changed that forever. The Wii is the weakest system by far and is NOT revolutionary. "Waggle" controls does not make it innovative. Nintendo tried motion controls way back on the original NES with the power glove (which I owned and know exactly what it was all about). Plus, the motion controls are not even that good in most of the games. It is not even close to being accurate and only works halfway decently in Wii Sports Bowling.
Nintendo has chosen this new way of doing business because they were lagging behind Sony way too much and had a replacement in competition when Sega quit and Microsoft stepped in. After the N64 and Gamecube got their asses handed to them Nintendo thought it was time for a change. They decided to make their system cheap, accessible and dumbed down with enough non-core games to bring as many traditionally non-gamers into their new game world where anyone can play. And that is perfectly fine for profits as we can all plainly see. However, it is not fine for traditional video games as it teaches the other companies that it is better to make those types of games instead of the ones that I actually want to play. Nintendo may not be hurting the industry as far as profitability is concerned, but they are sure hurting the traditional gaming community.
I really hope that MS and Sony continue to push the envelop with their hardware and software and keep traditional core games alive and kicking, otherwise I will have to find a new hobby. Because I will be damned if I am going to pretend to hula hoop with my mom, sister and other people that have no business in my lifetime past-time.
