Forums - Gaming - Core Games, Core Gamers and the Nintendo Wii

I have seen a lot of posts about core games, core gamers and the Wii. From what I have seen it is pretty clear that most people, especially the Wii crowd, have no idea what a core game or gamer actually is. I agree with the people that say that "core" games on the Wii will not sell the same amount as they will on the 360 and PS3. I can't even believe that anyone would try to say they would. First off, the Nintendo franchise games are no longer core games, I repeat, the Nintendo franchise games are no longer core games. This is simply due to the fact that those games are not what they used to be. Nintendo has made big changes that has taken away their right to be called core games. They have made them too accessible to any "non-gamer" and has made them way too easy and the controls way too different.

A core game example is Halo 3, even though I am not a huge Halo fan I still understand why the core gamers like it and I still play it sometimes. SMG is not a core game. And before you ask I owned and played SMG, and MP3, and Zelda: TP, and most of all the Nintendo made games for the Wii before I sold it for my PS3. The reason I sold it? Nintendo let me down, plain and simple. I have owned EVERY Nintendo system ever made. However, Nintendo is not the same company it was 20 years ago, 15 years ago, 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago. Nintendo, led by idiots like Fils-Aime, has changed the entire way the company does business.

Nintendo is no longer on the cutting edge in the video game world. The previous Nintendo systems were revolutionary and they always tried to make them with the newest and best hardware possible in order to stay ahead in the industry and make the best games. The Wii has changed that forever. The Wii is the weakest system by far and is NOT revolutionary. "Waggle" controls does not make it innovative. Nintendo tried motion controls way back on the original NES with the power glove (which I owned and know exactly what it was all about). Plus, the motion controls are not even that good in most of the games. It is not even close to being accurate and only works halfway decently in Wii Sports Bowling.

Nintendo has chosen this new way of doing business because they were lagging behind Sony way too much and had a replacement in competition when Sega quit and Microsoft stepped in. After the N64 and Gamecube got their asses handed to them Nintendo thought it was time for a change. They decided to make their system cheap, accessible and dumbed down with enough non-core games to bring as many traditionally non-gamers into their new game world where anyone can play. And that is perfectly fine for profits as we can all plainly see. However, it is not fine for traditional video games as it teaches the other companies that it is better to make those types of games instead of the ones that I actually want to play. Nintendo may not be hurting the industry as far as profitability is concerned, but they are sure hurting the traditional gaming community.

I really hope that MS and Sony continue to push the envelop with their hardware and software and keep traditional core games alive and kicking, otherwise I will have to find a new hobby. Because I will be damned if I am going to pretend to hula hoop with my mom, sister and other people that have no business in my lifetime past-time.

Is this a parody post? Or are you just afraid? Well I'm sorry, the days of the video game industry seeing your needs as more important than your mom's or your sisters are over. You will be the retro gamer that has failed to move with the times.

Halo 3 is not core. It's a casualized PC game. Nintendo was never a company that wanted to look after the 'core', they've always wanted to sell to your mom and sister, and you. But they can do without you now, which is what has you so scared.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I found SMG & Twilight Princess to be very hard games, and I've been gaming since the early 90's. Where do people g these ideas that Nintendo's games are dumbed down. They're not. This is a silly thread. Also, if you don't like the way Nintendo does business then DEAL WITH IT and stop complaining.

You picked a bad example of a core game, because Halo 3 is, like Nintendo's former core franchises, too accessible to non-gamers its self. In fact, it's one of the most mainstream franchises in gaming. I bought Halo 3 and was able to play through it on its hardest difficulty in about 6 hours or so, and it was first time beating a Halo game, and I don't even like FPS's.

I agree with you that hardcore games won't do as well on the Wii simply because Nintendo has not marketed the system towards that demographic; their goals are obvious at this point -- Nintendo wants to expand the market by bringing in people who did not grow up with video games. At the same time, games that are doing well on the Wii wouldn't be able to do as well on the HD consoles for the same reasons.

I don't get why this is a problem for people, to be honest. There are three consoles for people to chose from; some people even own multiple consoles. If your a hardcore gamer that wants a solid, diverse library of core games, then you should have bought a 360, not a Wii.

But honestly, Halo 3 was a bad game for you to call hardcore. You should have used something like Ninja Gaiden 2 if you wanted a 360 game. I doubt that game could have sold what it did on the Wii.

I think this a joke thread but I will say one thing. Nintendo isn't the same compamy as it was 20 years ago or 10 years ago or even 5 years ago. If it was it would probably be bankrupt and would be struggling to stay affloat. The Gamecube struggled and without the handheld side of things it would probably died a premature death. So if Nintendo stayed doing what it did then where would we be? A two horse race this gen. But Nintendo saw the light and went in a different route this gen and look where it has gone.

Now the Wii might not be your console of choice at the moment but I think Nintendo can miss out on 1 customer and pick up nearly 30 million more than last gen. Which is exactly what they have done.

please, not the same thing again!!

from the moment Zelda: Twilight Princess sold 5 million on Wii there's no discussion!

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

I love how people think that posts that are well written without using a bunch of fanboy crap are joke posts, but the fanboy nonsense posts are the ones they pay the most attention to. And to Destiny Blade, in case you didn't notice my signature, but I own a 360 and PS3. I had the 360 before I got the Wii.

What do the sales of 1 game have to do with my post at all? Sales do not determine whether or not a game is good or core. Wii Fit is destroying games like TP and SMG, do you think it is better or core?
