Witness MikeB's ignore-the-point strategy.

He was just saying something obvious. So what?

So his words don't make him look like the MS fanboy you were painting.

IMO that totally obvious comment has no relationship to his outrageous claims. He said the approaches needed to optimise for the PS3 is useless anywhere else. There's plenty of evidence to the contrary.

I don't say he is a Microsoft fanboy, I think more likely he has Microsoft stock and there are hidden agendas.

Someone with Microsoft stock and an agenda saying Windows Vista's improvements are useless? Give me a break.

@ NJ5

The game related progress in Vista is limited and it's also a huge performance drain. Considering the bulk of gamers stuck to XP, those are lots of potential consumers for him to reassure their games be able to run very well on their systems.

So when I said I loved Kameo for the 360 and liked the dashboard colors Microsoft picked I get a free pass on anything else? That's not the case.

I said the 360 was unreliable and badly put together well before Microsoft admitted huge problems to their investors, well before the recent revelations Microsoft knew about this before launch. I got attacked by fanboys because of this, despite it was true. So even 360 fanboys don't reason like that.

@MikeB: So if I'm understanding it right, Gabe Newell only has an agenda when he attacks the PS3. When he attacks Windows Vista and the 360 it's all fine.

This thread is still highly active? Wow...

Anyways, for reference (someone was asking for a link earlier), here's a link where John Carmack discusses what he thinks of the 360 and PS3 development tools: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3156329

While searching for this I also ran across a few other articles where he says the PS3 has more potential power but he prefers working with the 360's more familiar architecture: http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8578

In another interview he also said that he was disappointed with the CPU's in both systems but was impressed by their graphical capabilities: (http://www.gamepro.com/article/news/51600/john-carmack-on-xbox-360-and-ps3-theyre-slower-than-a-modern-pc/)

I don't think he's a fanboy to anyone. He's just stating his opinion as a (keyword here) PC game developer.

@MikeB
The point NJ5 is trying to make in your response to Fumanchu's post is that you deliberately ignore anything negative that Gabe says about the PS3 but then flip 100% and say he's absolutely right when he talks about the 360 and Vista. No one will take you seriously when you've shown this totally obvious bias towards one side.

The hard-drive point you made actually got me thinking. Perhaps MS was trying to screw Sony initially by not including a hard drive in all 360's. That way, multiplat games had to take "not being able to rely on a hard drive" into consideration while battling with the slower read speed of Blu Ray. Initially in the generation 3rd party developers were also hesitant to put too much effort into the PS3 because of "poor tools" (according to John Carmack and some others stated in this thread) so they didn't implement installs in the PS3 either, eventually leading to slightly/significantly (depending on which camp you take base at) inferior PS3 ports.

Fuck Valve. They haven't made a good game since Half Life 2.

lol @ whoever even bothered comparing Gears and Killzone graphics.

@ perpride.

A lot of the industry tends to disagree. Portal, HL2: EP 2 and Left4Dead have 89-91 ratings at Gamerankings.

The concept that a software developer should bend to the will of a hardware manufacturer simply because they wanted to go in a different direction is foolish.

Plenty of software companies warned Sony their design was not developer friendly and they should consider a more standard PC design, it was Sony's choice to not follow their advice. Gabe Newell has every right to laugh and say "I told you so".

Also, the concept that a software developer should tell a hardware manufacturer how to run their company is foolish. If Gabe doesn't wan't to dev for ps3, he shouldn't but he can keep his pie hole from spewing insults while he's at it.

Hold on back up a second.  You're telling me that a company that makes games for consoles and PC's, Valve, should have no input with the developers of the hardware for the platform on which those games are going to be running? While that is certainley one way to operate your business it's pretty clear that listening to your customers provides better results in the long run.

As far as Gabe shutting his mouth, when he gets asked a question he gives an answer, I don't see him scheduling a press conferences to spew these insults.  Although I agree sometmes it is better to say nothing.

In the one case he makes valid points and in the other case he pull things out of his arse. There's a difference.

Epic also criticized the performance overhead of DirectX in the past and said they maxed out the 360 hardware. (the second point I didn't agree with, IMO they just wanted to sell their game as top notch). They also claimed Gears of War couldn't be done on the PS3, which was clear and obvious propaganda.

while battling with the slower read speed of Blu Ray

Like pointed out many times, the PS3 Blu-Ray drive on average is faster than the 360's DVD drive (DL).
