Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 Shuts Up Gabe Newell!

It's IMO wise to treat comments from people like Carmack and Gabe with a bucketload of salt.

Gabe is just a Microsoft-era millionaire and behaves as such in support of Microsoft. Valve may not have much technical knowhow amongst its team as they always relied heavily on 3rd party middleware game engines to base their games on.

Carmack has been proven to spout propaganda for Microsoft as well. He even once claimed Doom couldn't be done on the Amiga, but of course as soon as the source code was made available a few days later Doom ran on older Amigas than same age top PCs could.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It’s really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted," Newell told Game Informer magazine. "I’d say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a ‘do over’. Just say, ‘This was a horrible disaster and we’re sorry and we’re going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it.’"

He didnt say anything negative about the PS3,he just pointed out facts, now if he said PS3 sucks and its a POS wihtout dated parts then yes i would agree.

See people, this is the type of comedy I want to see in posts addressing Gabe and company. It's more than a few lines and is presented in a manner that would lead you to believe that the person writing it actually believes what they're typing until you realize the sheer absurdity dripping off of it. It also helps if your post history has elicited frequent laughing.

This is far above the "Gabe Newell is fat!" tripe people have been passing off in this thread.

Oh come on Mike B

I now you are Pro Sony but to start parading your partisan beliefs as fact is taking everything a little too far.

Valve are some of the most creative talents in the industry and surely deserve at least grudging respect.

Likewise Carmack is one of the most supportive and technically accomplished coders out there. He even releases old game engines as open source to let fledgling devs cut their teeth.

So Gabe sometimes ruffles everyones feathers with harsh words. Its his perogative. He's the one with millions in the Bank. He's the one who controls his companies direction and pays the bills.

Had he said "its sales are quite disappointing and under expectations" and "exploiting the Cell without development tool suitable to mask enough architectural differences while letting fully tap its point of strength requires additional efforts by the developers and this could be not economically justifiable in  projects not giving enough guarantees of sufficient sales" we could consider him objective, calling PS3 "a horrible disaster" is over-the-top, to say the least.

Anything from the Hiphop gamer and his site is dumb.

Killzone 2's graphics look amazing but in the terms of gameplay it does nothing really new. Valve has never been one for amazing realistic graphics and thay doesn't make a game. Valve makes plenty of quality games such as Portal, Half-Life, Counter-Strike and Left 4 Dead. And hey, their games are selling like crazy.

Doom was also ported to the intellivision, but that doesn't mean that Carmack would be wrong in saying that the intellivision couldn't handle Doom

Intellivision Doom:

Regardless of what people say about John Carmack, his comments on what systems are capable of has been remarkably accurate in the past.

@ Cypher1980

Sure Valve has talented people employed, such as graphics artists (not Gabe of course, he's just a fat millionaire ) and level designers, but I was more talking about low-level game engine design. I don't think they have the in-house expertise like say Crytek, GG, Naught Dog, Insomniac, etc.

If they have the in-house talent, I would imagine they couldn't wait to start tapping the PS3's potential (it benefits other platforms as well).

Doom code doesn't run on the intellivision I assure you.

Come on, even Quake as poblished by Clickboom runs on 68k Amigas available at the time of Doom's release. PCs had to be heavily upgraded to play Doom, many just bought a new PC.
