Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 Shuts Up Gabe Newell!

....eh....I don't think looking at killzone 2 is going to make Gabe Newell feel bad...or stupid...or whatever the aim of that post/blog/whatever that was. The guy is sitting on a mountain of money, is considered one of the premier minds in modern gaming and Valve is both highly respected and freaking rich. And Killzone 2 is supposed to make him suck it? Wii sports resort has equal chance of making him feel bad about not developing for wii.

Why does anyone care what Gabe thinks or what is company does or doesn't want to do?  Doesn't the PS3 have enough stuff?   Whining about Gabe and Valve is like whining about Kojima not wanting to bring MGS to the 360.  It is his choice, so be it.

Also, how do we know it is "guaranteed money"?  Was Bioshock on the PS3 "guaranteed money"?  Did they even break even with it?  How about The Orange Box?  Was that "guaranteed money"?

A "few million extra sales"?  Did Bioshock on the PS3 do this?  Anyone know what The Orange Box did on the PS3?

http://www.vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=13320

It didn't even sell 200,000 copies (according to this site).   It did 850,000 copies (according to this site) on the 360.

If doing a port doesn't even cover the costs of development for a system, why should a company do it?  There are VERY FEW titles that break into multimillion copies on the PS3.   There are times when games need to NOT be multiplatform.

Ok, I'm going to have fun with this..

I never once said I give a rats ass what Gabe thinks or what his company wants to do.  If he doesn't port to the PS3 or any other platform for that matter, I'm not going to bat an eye.  "It's his choice, so be it."  - that's exactly what I said, you're completely out of context here.

It's garunteed money.  I garuntee that.  If they released Left 4 Dead on 360 and PS3 at the same time, it would have sold at least a million units on the PS3.  What's 1 million x $60?  A lot of damn money.

Bioshock is the worst possible example you could have used.  Explain to me, and please take your time, why any PS3 owner would want to pay $60 for a game that's a year old?  Especially when it's 360 counterpart was something like $40 when the PS3 version released.  If you release any game a year late on any platform, unless it's a huge game in the likes of, say, GTA or Final Fantasy, it's not going to sell well.  Period.

As far as Orange Box, yeah, Ok...except that's a niche title.  I see what you're saying here, but the game didn't even sell a million on the 360, so using that as a comparison is not a good idea.  Had it sold, say, 2 million on 360 and 500k on PS3, point taken.  Left 4 Dead would have sold more, that should be generally accepted by most here.

he did talk "shit" about the PS3

however SONY is one of the most important companies in the industry

I hate the arrogant man....don't care if he created a great game

he has no right to be an arrogant bitch about it

TBH after seeing COd4 & COD5 sales on the PS3....HIS company NEEDS PS3 more than PS3 needs them

This is very true, day and date releases of big games will net you another million or two in sales and that means $30 million in revenue, the only reason some 3rd party games (MGS4, Gears 1 and 2, ME, TOV, FFvXIII, SO4, etc) are still exclusive is because of money hats, no one will convince me other wise.

True.

Although he is a pompous ass,  who is basically under Microsoft's thumb.  I don't even know why people take him seriously in any capacity as it pertains to 360/PS3?  Where he does get shut up, is his complaints about the PS3 fall on deaf ears.  KZ2 is a competitive title that is every bit as good or better than almost any of Valves releases recently.  If the PS3 was the piece of junk hardware as he so eloquently described,  no one (Especially a lowly, trash developer like GG) would be able to develop for it.

Terribly misleading title, and how a game with a supposedly forty million dollar budget in development for half a decade proves anything is really beyond me. With that kind of money and time the game had better be a incredibly solid product. That would be regardless of developer, architecture, and team size. That really doesn't apply to any third party developer really. Not to mention Guerrilla didn't even have to juggle platforms.

To be forcibly blunt it seems to me that the PS3 is indeed built from the ground up to be full of the fail. So what if Gabe called Sony on that. After all it isn't as if Sony is denying it hell according to them they are very proud of that fact. They wanted to make it very difficult on third party developers. Apparently mostly due to the fact that Sony doesn't give a shit about third party developers. Once again they basically said as much. Then you have the entire issue of Sony being too good to help small third party developers. Instead choosing to spend money on their studios. Once again Sony is proud of this. Basically Sony is very proud of fucking over everyone except for Sony of coarse.

Explain it to me if this is part of the Sony strategy, and it is paying the dividends the way they wanted. Well why are you guys upset, or think you have something to prove. I mean if you think Sony is right. Well then you didn't want him making games for you anyway. In fact there are a lot of developers you do not want making games for the PS3. What are you guys changing your mind. Well if that is the case change platforms. It isn't like rocket science.

I can probably count on one hand the number of big name developers or industry spokesmen that put themself in the public eye that don't sound like pompous asses. Will Wright sounds intelligent and above the fray, miyamoto sounds innocent and child like, and pretty much everyone else sounds like a jack ass when they talk. This isn't news so much as it is more fanboy in fighting.

Why would anyone want junker, inferior games on a console?  There isn't one Valve game that is better on the consoles.  They are PC built games through and through.

Well Newell can say whatever he wants, I won't be missing his games LMAO. If you make a good game, be humble about it and the respect will come.

Asking a company to ditch a product they spent 3 bln on is beyond unreasonable...it's downright stupid!

Newell suggested this before they lost the entirety of the PS2's profit on the PS3, as I remember.

Doesn't matter when he said it. When R&D is done, its done. It was already expensive before they started making price cuts and taking huger losses. you really think sony's gaming division should have skipped this gen? That is as senseless as it gets.

like I said, if you're a ganme dev, dev your games for whatever platform you want but don't tell people how to run their business...in a condescending manner to boot. Did this guy think his games would've "saved" the ps3 or sony would die without him? What a joker. Have fun playing his games. I never bought any of them in my life and couldn't care less about his support.

This would be a fair point if he hadn't been right. Newell said the PS3 was going to be a disaster for Sony financially, and he was right. Yes, faced with the way things have turned out versus just dropping th R&D costs and bailing, they would have been better off washing their hands, financially. That sounds rough, but it's true.

It still doesn't make sense. If they bailed out and saved themselves from further losses. Sony's would lose all its footing in the gaming industry and would be relegated to sega's status. After what happened when they were late to the LCD generation, I don't think it would be in their best interest to abandon gaming.

Also, don't act like Newell = Nostradamus. He still had the benefit of hindsight. R&D was done. Anyone could guess that a  $600 console won't be taking over many living rooms regardless of what it brought to the table.

You cannot, cannot talk shit about Gabe Newell. He can be a bit of a lout from time to time, but it comes down to the fact that he's one of the most important minds in the industry, not just for his own projects but because he makes sure that other people can complete theirs and distribute them (read: Portal).

And you can say a lot about Killzone 2, but if it has half the brilliance that Valve's last few projects showed then it's going to be more than I expect out of the game.

Not true, I hate Gabe and think he is a complete douche. The does not mean I do not love Valve, Steam, and their games.

Also while I do know HL2:Ep3 is a more important FPS to the genre, Killzone 2 does show that Valve is lazy on the console front, which I like since they are a PC dev first and foremost.
