And what was the size of DS cartridges again? I doubt it is enough to contain 3 CDs worth of game. It would get a PSP remake if anything, at least at the same level of graphics.
If they are not going to go all out for the remake like everyone wants(full usage of HD on the PS3) then its not even worth doing. If they fuck it up it will be the end of SE and there will be no saving them... |
The DS is more powerful than the PS1 when considering the resolution. The DS can imitate N64 level graphics without AA pretty well and the N64 was capable of better graphics thna the PS1.
At the very least it could handle FF VII graphics. Have you played FF4s remake? Most of FF7 is 2D. The characters are 3D models with the same level of detail as FF4.
As for size FF7 was on 3 CDs but much ofthe information on all three discs was duplicated. If I made 3 DVDs and made all of the menus the same and made the menus 6 gigs each the first 2 discs would have 12 gigs of unique information. The third Disc disc wouldn't have to fill the entire disc to be efficent. So 3 DVDs in the said hypothetical would be a maximum of 14 gigs and a minimum of over 12 gigs...If space was efficiently used whcih isnot neccesarily the case but a good appoximation.
Since we are talking CDs we are talking 3x650 Megs or roughly 1.95 gigs. The DS's largest cartridge is 2 gigabits so it would have to be 8 times smaller. Considering that modern techniques allow for higher compression(Sound can be compressed over 12 times the redbook standard used on the original game. Video can be compressed over 8 times greater with almost no quality loss than what was available when the PS1 was around. These were the biggest consumer of memory in the game so just on that alone you could probably fi the game on a cartridge...BUT...
The PC version of the game is 1 Gigabyte and the actual size of the game is only 1.29 Gigabytes on the PS1. So in reality it only needs to be compressed 4-5 times to fit on the DS. I don't know the break down for audio and video with size or how large the actual game data is though. All the backgrounds are 2d and that again can be compressed even more today.
It won't be easy but I do think the DS could handle a port of FF7. As evidence I point out RE2 which was on the N64 with sloppier compression than what the DS can do.
In the end it is a mute point. At best the DS could handle a straight port and not a true remake that everyone woudl want. I don't think SE would do it either. But FF7 could fit on one cartridge. If a remake does occur expect to see it on the next gen systems not this gen or maybe the DS2 or PSP2.
