Forums - Sony - Ah my PS3 crapped out on me!

It won't read discs anymore. I can't hear the discs spin so it's not even trying. Sony should extend its warranty. Now they want me to pay 150 to repair it...It's a 60gb launch console. Any ideas?

Update: She keeps dying on me! Now it's not displaying at all through HDMI. I've already gave up and payed Sony, but it's a matter of waiting for the box. I was hoping I could at the very least play the Killzone 2 demon in HD...I've been looking forward to this game the most since I got my PS3. What perfect timing.

Nope. I have actually heard many personal experience stories from my friends and relatives relating to the launch PS3's and disc drive failures....

Must be the PS3's RROD!!! OH NOES EPIDEMIC!!!! /Sarcasm guys but the part about having relatives and friends with this same issue is true.

bummer man my neighbor dropped there ps3,and they think that the fan stopped working and now it is fried lol.i cant help u much i have a xbox and it is still under warranty

This happened to my nephews 40gig model. I called around and no one at all can repair or replace except Sony. It is the blue-ray drive and only Sony has the drives used in the PS3 and refuse to wholesale them out.

On the bright side, Sony offers a free shipping option for this repair though.

1% failure rate... I think its your fault, you probably stuck your fingers in the slot!

Im sorry to hear about it, just try to avoid folding at home if you want to make sure you don't have a 2nd failure.

P.S they have quietly extended the warranty on the 60gb models, call up and you may be surprised. We 60gb owners are sexy and Sony loves us more than the non BC owners.

Sony is famous for disc read errors, so no shocker that the launch units have problems. However, these DRE aren't the same as the PS2 version where you could fix it by realigning the laser. Unless you can find the same motor and install it yourself (which actually probably isn't that hard), you're stuck paying Sony.

I'm just hoping my 80GB unit that I got in November has an improved drive and I never have to worry about it.

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Sony can't afford 1 billion dollars of RROD repair.

Sony doesn't have to pay a $1B RROD repair bill. Even if this was a major problem, it probably costs significantly less to replace the drive motor than it does to replace the motherboard and add heatsinks.

Yep, you lack faith in the Playstation brand and you wavered... But you made up for it by buying a partial BC model.
