Too bad you played it on Wii. See, I have a Wii, and RE4 Wii Edition, but I bought RE4 for teh Gamecube  on Day One, while Wii has a more intuitive control, RE4 for GC is how it was meant to be (harder). I also had a rough time with the demo due to playing RE4 for Wii. Just "train harder" and you will get the grip of it :D

Well now that I've had some time with it I can give my impressions.

 

It is exactly what I expected, and I'm not disapointed by that. It's RE4 in Africa in HD. RE2 was RE1 to a tee except you were in a police station instead of a mansion. RE2 is probably the best RE. RE 3 was RE 1 and 2 in the city plus a big monster chasing you, it too was awesome. Once capcom finds a formula that works they stick with it. Look at Megaman, or Devil May Cry or Street Fighter. Capcom hits a home run and then runs with the ball (gotta love mixed sports metaphors). This is Capcom doing what capcom does best. Improving on their own awesome ideas.

Yes, RE has in essence become an action game that creates a mood of intensity with subtle scary music, people screaming in languages you don't understand while they chase you, and less than obvious ammo to make sure you're always just about to run out. I don't see this as a terrible thing. At first I sort of did, but then I thought about the alternative. Staying in the same place I don't think would be the best idea. But that is a whole different discussion.

The game is what it is, the question is...is it good. And I'd have to say yes. If you like RE4 and played it on PS2 or GC and can get over not having IR, then yes it's good. I enjoyed the co-operative nature more than I thought I would. Sheva stayed out of the way, managed to be somewhat helpful without doing my job for me, didn't get into too much trouble by herself and all and all managed to be unintrusive in my single player experience. Online managed to be quite intense with my partner and I trying to look after each other, but at times getting seperated. I could see myself returning to the game after beating it by myself to have fun in online co-op.


The control felt like Resident evil. That may feel dated in todays action world, but honestly the controls from the old RE felt dated long before it changed it's style in RE4. Resident Evil is a series that caters to it's fanbase. RE4 probably split the fanbase while adding to it, and RE5 will continue to satisfy the RE4 crowd. But I don't think it's being made for the Gears crowd even if they made slight concessions with the control set up.

Asking if RE5 is good is like asking if sex with your wife is good. You already know exactly what to expect, you've done it plenty of times before, and if you're still doing it then it's because you must like it. And that's how I feel about RE5. It's my wife with a sexy new outfit. I'm going to enjoy it.

I am with you to a degree on the controls. I had been hoping more for about Dead Space type controls, but the entire bizarre setup where your character is too retarded to walk and chew bubble gum setup was a let down. I wiill probably still get the game but it is going to be more of a mid-summer slump type game for me.

It looks fantastic. If I had any complaint on the visuals the lighting was a bit off, not sure exactly how but it seemed wrong.

From someone that loved RE4 and the franchise, I don't get a survival horror feeling from the franchise anymore. However, RE4 remains my favorite game of the franchise despite its story and general feel that makes it different from the other games. I also believed the franchise should go back to its roots as RE4 should have been a one time thing. I get more of a third-person shooter feel, especially having Alomar (with co-op in the game when it's released), rather than a survival horror.



I know the subject of demo impressions has been beaten to death, but there's one thing I'd like to add.

I played an online co-op match with a friend of mine who is a long time resident evil fan, and can definitely hold his own. It made for a really enjoyable co-op experience: sharing ammo and supplies, formulating some pretty complicated strategies, along with just beating the shit out of zombies. I found that playing with another friend made the game much more fun, and both of us really enjoyed the co-op dynamic. We can't wait for the full version.
