Forums - Gaming Discussion - Where can I learn to play Street Fighter 2 better?

HD remix has rekindled my love affair with Street Fighter 2. I forgot how much I absolutely adore this game. I'm not a bad player, but I'm not exactly super skilled either. I win some lose some playing online, but I'm old school Street Fighter 2 SNES and arcade player. I am well aware of the fact that there are numerous layers of depth and strategy I'm not aware of, and there is an entire SF2 language that I just don't understand. When I go to Smash Bros message boards I know what people are talking about, I follow the meta-game of melee and Brawl. But when I go to a SF2 message board I'm lost.

So where do I go to learn? I can't find any good guides and I haven't been able to turn up anything interesting on Google or youtube (for learning anyway, some awesome videos). I'm sure there is a huge library of Street fighter 2 turbo knowledge, where is it at?

There is no teacher like experience.

Practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect. You don't get better from learning to do things the wrong way, or at least you learn alot faster if there is a source to learn from. I'm all for experience, but having actual knowledge makes learning go a hundred times faster. Given enough time I could probably learn some quantum physics on my own, but it's alot easier to just pick up a book.

Thanks for the site Onyx, but that's a wee bit too basic unless I'm missing something. I know that pressing back blocks, and the move sets for most of the characters. I'm wanting something a little more advanced. I mean what the hell is a shoto character? Or a shotoscrub? What's a fireball trap? How do I get somebody in one, and how do I get out of one? So on and so forth.

My older brother, his friends, and myself used to do that. A short, funny smelling, morbidly obese, acne ridden kid that only went by the name "Sonny" ruled that cabinet like it was Cuba and we'd line up for our rations of ass kicking. He'd even let us pick his character. Only in that time period, in that place could he be a god. Good times.

To add on to that site, I found this Wiki they did which is a strategy guide featuring advanced techniques. Hopefully this helps.

Fantastic. Those Shoryuken and wiki pages are exactly what I wanted. I will pour over those tomorrow. Thanks a bunch.

While I do hope nobody would describe me like they obviously did that poor "god," I do recall plenty of good arcade times with Street Fighter II - things like being on the machine for an hour or more and defeating all comers, or even nicer winning for a while and then having someone pay me to get off so they could have a chance.  Yeah, lots of fun.  Man, I haven't played SF2 since forever ago either.
