I had no problems with the slashing. Worked fine for me. But Ready at Dawn really did quite a poor job with the Wii controls. A lot of them work fine, but some are just awful. If you've just started the game you're most likely gonna be in for some fun. :p Just wait 'till you get to the digging minigames, or the part where you have to paint a kimono... :p You'll want to tear your hair out.
Still, it's an incredible game and I really ike it. :)

Yeah, you do eventually get used to it; drawing straight lines is, actually, quite difficult! I think that is more of the issue with the controls (not that they might have been better, however).

Yeah, Okami for Wii has a pretty tough learning curve, took me quite a while before everything "clicked". Now preforming any brushstroke turns a work of art (olol I'm clever).
