Strikes have broken out across the UK in support of a walkout by energy workers over the use of foreign labour.

Hundreds gathered for the third day of the original strike at Lindsey Oil Refinery, Lincs, after owner Total gave a £200m contract to an Italian firm.

They have been supported by hundreds of other "sympathy" strikers in Scotland, Wales and other parts of England.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he does not regret promising "British jobs for British workers".

'No redundancies'

Mr Brown's remarks - to the Labour Party conference in 2007 - have been seized upon by protesters, who say they will resume their protests on Monday.

Total said there would be no "direct redundancies" as a result of the deal.

This turn down is getting worse and worse imo.

Here in Ireland today Waterford Crystal closed its gates at present there is a sit in by workers who were told this morning your jobs are gone 480 of them.

Is anyones job safe at present.

I also read on the beeb that Bill Gates predicts a 4 year turndown.

The world will have to adjust to globalization in the capitalist society. No nation is immune to it, except maybe Micronesia. Jobs for locals should always be first priority in hiring practices; however, when the cream of the crop is elsewhere would you as a CEO A. hire substandard workers or B. look elsewhere for the best and get your investment's worth?

Same here in Ireland stubbs just more bad news every day.

I actually hate putting the news on.

 And, yet, people still don't learn. We'll be having it all again 2015-2018, just like how we had it in the 90s, the 80s, etc.

I lived through both so I remember the hard times.

Its the younger ones who have just known boom times I fear for.

Hopefully it wont get that bad although I have my doubts.

My mate was saying the other day years ago we had nothing but we owed nothing.

Now everyone lives on credit it seems.

Hmmm... this thread's inspired me to make one of my own, just demonstrating the basics of how macroeconomics work, and how growth/recession happens, that kind of thing.

Well if you can tell me Ireland wont go like Iceland im all for it.
