Forums - Sony - Sony Gaming Devision Posts 400 mill yen profit in Q3

Isn't the problem also the currency excahnge rates. Sony use to make most of their money by selling their products to other countries when the vaule of their currency was much higher then the Yen. Now with the vaule of the dollar falling they are in a rought spot. Yes they save money on using a smaller chip set but that might only be getting them back to where they use to be when the dollar was high. So would they not still be losing money?

Well...
PSP+PS2+PS3 = $4million , I am quite sure that PS3(Software+Hardware) isn't breaking even yet. Maybe later this year.

Maybe ps3 sw+hw already profitable. Consider this, operating income for game division went from -39.5b yen in Q208 to 0.4b yen in q308, an improvement of 40b yen ($444m) but as you can see from the table below there was no change in ps2 hardware shipments. psp and ps3 hardware are up 2m, software ps2 gained 7m, psp 4m and ps3 20m.  It looks to me that the gain in ps3 software is the main contributor to the $444m, since it is almost 2/3 of the software increase and ps3 games are priced higher than ps2 and psp.  The contribution from 2m psp hardware is probably not that significant.  So if 20m software gain was able to offset the loss in the extra 2m in ps3 harware loses,  it is likely that the total 40m ps3 software also offsets the loss of the 4.5m ps3 hw sold. For instance, if each ps3 loses $100, then the aditional 2M ps3 lost $200m and the software combined must have gained 200+444=644m, and 20m ps3 software should be more than 2/3, that is $500m. If this is right,  the total 40m ps3 software gained $1b and the 4.5m ps3 hardware lost $450m which is a $550m gain for ps3 sw+hw.  If each ps3 loses $150 the gain for hw+sw will be lower, but still positive.

What you think?

q208 q308
hwps2 2.50 2.52
hwpsp 3.18 5.08
hwps3 2.43 4.46
swps2 29.7 23.1
swpsp 15.5 11.8
swps3 40.8 21.1

So profit from PS2+PSP < $4M... With 34.9million software and 7.60million hardware sold? If we take only software and see how much Sony would get for each software it would mean that sony gets about $0.10(average) for each game that is sold for PS2 & PSP. And that doesn't include even hardware. Uhm?... :)

You're right.  I found what I missed out, inventory declined by 44B yen from end of q208. That inventory was sold and explains the gain in operating income and not the 20m ps3 software increase as i suggested. Thank you for pointing it out.

Sony are not breaking even on the PS3.

The latest quarterly results prove that. The profitable PS2 and PSP got them to $4 million, and those two platforms are dying (quickly in the PS2's case).

Sony are probably at LEAST a few months from breaking even on the PS3 and even then the console is selling poorly at this price relative to the other consoles, so they will need to drop back into losing money if they hope to recover with respect to the console war.

ya so ur saying they made 4 mil with the ps3 losing money i doubt it i think they can cut price soon

PLAYSTATION®3 is the future.....NOW.......B_E_L_I_E_V_E

Consoles owned: Game Cube, Gameboy Color, Gameboy Advance, Nintendo DS, PSP, PS1, PS2, PS3.

My prediction: NATAL WILL NOT help 360 sales. Maybe a 50-100k boost week 1, then a 30-70 k boost week 2, and back to the norm again after 3-5 weeks.

But with Sony closing the game division, how is that going to work?

LOL 4 million is not a lot ... of course PS3 lost Sony money you would have to be delusional not to think so.

Positive Sony new's is always great.
I think it's safe to say we hear enough negative news about Sony around here.

You must have missed the fact they're doing pretty bad at the moment and plenty of "negative" news is to be expected.

Oh you must have also missed the 1000 Killzone threads.

Nope, I'm well aware that they aren't doing very well.

What's wrong with hyping a great game?
