Forums - Sales - Sony and Nintendo financial reports today

It takes them time to ramp up production, then they have to build the prototypes, then they have to test them, then they have to submit them to the authorities for testing such as FCC etc, then they have to build up stocks, then they have to clear the channels of the existing models etc etc.

This all takes time. The length of time between submission to the FCC and release has been around 2 - 4 months for previous models. No new models have been submitted to the FCC since the new 80Gb in July 2008.

New hardware revisions often see staggered releases between the regions, so it could be that we won't see 45nm PS3 in all regions until FY 09 H2, but may see it in one or more regions earlier.

Here's a transcript of a question from the Q&A at Sony's Earnings Release:

Q: My second question is related to Playstation number 3, and the profitability is increasing, and when are you going to be seeing profit in the field of hardware? and in the third quarter there was some reduction in the unit, what is your forecast for this?

A: If we base our projections on the present exchange rate to continue and if introduction of the 45 nano chips (it is being used in manufacturing already), but in view of that by latter half of next year sometime there I believe that we can see the improved margin and start to see profit.

Q: Point of confirmation, when you say later next year, is it later the second half of the calender year 2009, or the fiscal year 2009.

A: Fiscal year 2009, that's March 2010.

I just posted your transcription in the news article, attributing it to you of course!
