With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

I could (hypothetically speaking) see us heading towards a 1 console future but this would only happen if third party developers get fed up with the constant console war. If the top 10 or 15 third party publishers in the world got together and produced their own console standard (similar to what was attempted with the 3DO) ...
If you took advantage of multi-core processor design to combine the CPU, GPU, Audio Processor and large cache of on processor memory they could produce a moderately powerful system at an affordable price (which allows opportunity for profit).
Yeah, unless Microsoft or Sony pull out of the console race altogether this is not going to happen.

I would call it a distopian vision. Competition drives innovation and lower prices. If there was only one console to choose from, it would be too expensive, and would not develop new features as quickly. The Wii is the perfect example of this -- if all three companies had consolidated 5 years ago, would we have a Wii Remote today? I highly doubt it.
This is not gonna happen, the VG market is very big, and it will be bigger. Too much money, why I have to share if I can make more money(apparently) alone?. Competition is always the way to get better.

No competition is bad for the market. Fanboys should thank the maker of the console they want to see fail that they continuously have to step up their game. We can see how this works with Windows - going between half-way decent (XP) and crap (Me before). The next edition, Vista aka. ME 2, is looking to be crap.
