I could (hypothetically speaking) see us heading towards a 1 console future but this would only happen if third party developers get fed up with the constant console war. If the top 10 or 15 third party publishers in the world got together and produced their own console standard (similar to what was attempted with the 3DO) ...
If you took advantage of multi-core processor design to combine the CPU, GPU, Audio Processor and large cache of on processor memory they could produce a moderately powerful system at an affordable price (which allows opportunity for profit).
