Forums - General - Actual Blu-Ray replication costs VS. HD-DVD replication costs.

If you read what I said in the original thread, you would know that I said HDDVD has higher margins than Bluray.

This does not mean that production cost is the only factor. One of the issues is the licensing fees associated with selling movies on either format. HDDVD is cheaper than Bluray in this regard, and seems to be far more willing to make deals that are favorable to the movie studios. This is part of the reason why HDDVD is what most indie films are appearing on. Basically, look at the bigger picture - DVD's cost comes from more than the replication.

And I still think the potential Wal-mart sub 200 HDDVD player could have been a big motivator.

Nice post akuma, it shows that there is no reason why anyone would pick HD-DVD over Blu-ray unless they were paid to.

Of course there is.

BR specifications aren't finalized yet which means that consumers who want to take full advantage of all of BR's features will have to buy new players in November.

BTW, note it's "hardware" upgrade.  Firmware upgrade probably won't cut it.

PS3's should be fine...

Here are some more replication costs... For very large numbers (100'000 +) the 25GB Blu Ray discs costs the same as a 30GB HD DVD disc. 50GB Blu Ray NOT available (as I said before margins are very poor and not viable unless Sony makes them at discount for you)

Is 25GB enough?, it's marginal but it certainly isn't when you use mpeg2 like Sony has done with most of it's discs.

if fuh yuan comes out with anything before end of the year, things will get even more interesting. :)

Thanks for posting the link.

PS3 owners will probably indeed be fine though, as lvader said.

Thank you for the source!  But I agree that the "hardware" part of the hardware upgrade is already more than met by the PS3.

Although it is troubling that Blu-ray is still finalizing its standards, I remain confident that it is the superior technology.  I feel bad for early adopters who will never be able to do picture-in-picture and that other added stuff, but let's not confuse that with the ideal:  what would be the best format 5 or 10 years down the road?
