Forums - Gaming - Sony Is Working Harder Than Microsoft and Nintendo

Well of course they are working the hardest they have they have the crappiest PR on the planet so for every advertisement / comment they have to make another to rebuke th previous!

"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""

Around the Network

I don't think anyone could tell what goes on... how hard of work they're doing, but I'd assume that Nintendo works the hardest in terms of gaming since they don't have other divisions like Sony and Microsoft do. Yet, it always seems like they're bathing in money. I don't know, it's difficult to tell from where I am.

We all know who is winning the console war, but who is putting more effort into their gaming division? We break down the basics in each company’s work efforts, and showed what each company has to deal with in the gaming industry.

Advertising: Everyone knows that Microsoft is doing an excellent job with their advertising campaign. You see their advertisements all over national television, stores, and even in some cases on Mountain Dew (Halo 3). Nintendo does not advertise to quite the extent of Microsoft, but that there really is no need for it. The Wii already has ridiculous sales and there is no need for Nintendo to waste their money on marketing. Everyone already knows what the Wii is about and putting commercials everywhere would be useless. And then comes Sony. We all know that Sony is not on the ball with their marketing but I feel we will begin to see changes this year. We have already seen them advertise to the max with the Winter X-Games and I look for it to continue. Especially with titles like Killzone 2, God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rain, and much more expected this year.

Microsoft: Microsoft currently only has to deal with one platform, the Xbox 360. With one console, they have to work on games for that console as well as bring out firmware updates. They also need to manage the production of the console and keep up with marketing. Now with Microsoft’s games, without a doubt they have amazing titles but do you think they are working to build developers or build companies? No, they are not. What they do is go to a company and tell them they will pay a certain amount of money to make their game exclusive. All this requires is money and all they are doing is buying games that are either going to be multiplatform now or be on that one console. With all this free time on their hands, what is taking so long to fix the Red Ring of Death and the newly discovered E74 hardware issues?

Nintendo: Nintendo currently has to manage two consoles on the market, the DS and the Wii. Nintendo has to produce both platforms and create games (anyone up for another Mario or Wii ____ title?). Nintendo does not really have to worry about marketing so they save time and money there but they also need to work on the updates for the Wii (which are not even close to the significance of the 360 and PS3 updates). The DS doesn’t even really get updates although they have updated the hardware which led to a sales jump but is not a benefit for people who already purchased one.

Sony: Sony currently has to manage three consoles on the market, the PS2, PSP, and the PS3. Sony has to deal with the production of all three platforms and still manage to put out games for them. True, the PS2 and PSP’s game library have not been updated with solid games for awhile now but the PSP has a few big titles coming soon like Resistance: Retribution, Patapon 2, as well as a few others. On the other hand, Sony is obviously working very hard on their game library with recent releases like Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, and much more. And look what PS3 gamers have to look for this year like Killzone 2, God of War 3, Heavy Rain, and many more. Sony does not do the Microsoft thing where they buy the exclusives, what they do is buy and build first party studios who then develop brand new IPs which are exclusive. This requires much more face to face work with companies and a lot of explaining the hardware since Sony went with a futuristic console. Sony is also working hard on PlayStation Network. True, PlayStation Home is not what Sony said it was going to be, but look how quick it has evolved since the release of the open beta, which has only been out for a month and a half. They released the Video Store during E3 08 and look how that has taken off. The PlayStation Video Store had a larger library than 360’s in three weeks and now it has a much larger library. Now they do have a movie studio and I understand that, but this shows how hard Sony is working to improve the PlayStation Network and keep it free. Lastly, they need to spend time on the firmware updates for the PS3 which add some useless programs and features but they also add significant features that enhance your overall experience while using the console. Not only do they release firmware updates for the PS3, but as well as the PSP. If you look at the PSP when it first launched and then looked at it now, you would realize that it has evolved into something amazing that can be used by everyone every day. Features like the web browser and the “Remote Play” feature (which allows you to interact and control your PS3 anywhere there is Wi-Fi) are just two of the significant features added to the PSP during its life cycle.

So who do you think is working harder this generation? Leave a comment with your thoughts. And please remember we are not talking about which company is selling their platforms better, we are talking about which company is doing better for the gamers.

Fanboyism???

I'm sorry, but this post is absurdly bias. The fanboyism, as you say, has reached critical mass. First off Nintendo shouldn't be mentioned in this post going by your logic. Nintendo is purely a gaming company while MS and Sony are more or less conglomerates. At any given time Sony and MS are working simultaneously on many different things besides their gaming divisions. Besides MS does have the zune hd in the works which they are pushing as a gaming platform. Forgot to mention that I suppose?? .....of course you did.

Secondly, did I read correctly??? Did you really compare sony's PSN to MS's LIVE service?? Saying that sony has the best library or has the most powerful console etc are certainly debatable and valid arguments. However Xbox Live is the cream of the crop in terms of online services and it is not even close...at all. Where did you get that psn's video library is larger than the xbox live video library?? Provide a Link or something because 360's library is immense. I hope you're not just talking about movies either since MS did at netflix to their PREMIUM service. Not to mention they have shows upon shows upon shows, mostly current shows updated as soon as the episodes are released, across about 30-40 networks. As well, as niche channels devoted to classics or specific genre's like the anime channel which is very very large and has old as well as current anime shows. They have much more HD content than psn and they are now adding instant play for netflix and any other video on live at blu ray definition 1080p. No downloads...none. Don't forget to mention live tv coming to europe courtesy of UK company SkyTV. They also have many music videos across many genre's not just the popular pop and babbling. Then there's the newly added facebook and twitter. Bore, but it's exclusive content. LiveFM. Meaning live radio brought to you courtesy of MS from many stations around the country and the world. Then there is XBLA which is arguably the best. This aspect of the live service is much closer and certainly debatable. This year MS is certainly adding to their arcade library with perfect dark arcade original title shadow complex from epic. The there's exclusive sega arcade titles, about 3 sonics, a shinobi among a few others. Joy ride, the avatar cart game that looks very promising and is...FREE! Lastly 1vs100 live game show which is in it's beta stage and is going marvelously. It's actually live and people will be able to win prizes, very exciting.

If your're going to argue in favor of the PSN why would you mention HOME???? Nothing like a failed venture to bolster one's argument, eh?

Thirdly, where is your proof that all MS does is buy games from studios?? Sure they sometimes do this but it's blown way out of proportion. Fanboy's cling to this and claim this is only what MS does. Yet they have EPIC, Rare, Lionhead Studios and so on. They made Bungie who they are today. They also share strong relationships with valve and bioware. These companies genuinely favor the 360. Money buy games and loyalty but it can't buy love. In your post, you fail to point out that Sony has had nearly 15 years to build a loyal and devoted army of developers. MS just came into the game in late 01', really 2002 and had a very poor showing in which they didn't build much brand loyalty and confidence from developers. They are doing what they have to do to bring as many games as they can to the 360 being the newest member of the industry. If you look at it fairly and unbiased, it is really quite amazing how well 360 is doing against two highly established, deeply entrenched companies. Companies that were once exclusive to one platform now make games for 360 as well. Sometimes they even make exclusives for the 360.

Sony is reaping the benefits of years of work. Not neccesarily working as hard now as in the past. That being said I believe they are. After all their in the midst of a console war and they are amazingly in third place. They should be doing hard labor to stay on par and surpass the other companies in sales and profitability. This year and next year especially, Sony has a strong lineup. Looking forward to it.

I can only speak for the UK but both Nintendo and Microsoft seem to convey a better message than Sony. Sony's message always seems confusing when it is trying to convey what it is outside of a straightforward game advert.

Nintendo do an excellent job in conveying the family and fun aspects of the Wii which obviously are the areas it is succeeding in most.

Microsoft do a good job in a series of adverts that convey it is more than just a games console. Given the recent E3 announcment I fully expect Microsoft to go full steam in the last quarter pushing the social integration with Facebook and twitter and with Sky on board you can bet your arse they will advertise that to death.

As for working hard I would take the stance somebody said earlier that they will all be working like dogs. I think my angle is how effective that work rate is end of the day. If I was to classify workrate and success then Nintendo get it by a long way then Microsoft with Sony a very distant third. The only positive I can spin for Sony is that the game adverts give a very good account for the PS3.
