Was just looking at the numbers from the first 4 weeks of 09 compared to 08 and see this

(these numbers yet to include japan numbers for this week which will increase Wii/360 % and decrease ps3 % due to year over year increases/decreases)

So in the first 4 sales weeks of 2009 we see

Wii selling 1.64M units Worldwide (january 09)

PS3 selling 738k units Worldwide (january 09)

360 selling 985k units Worldwide (january 09)

PSP selling 924k units Worldwide (january 09)

DS selling 1.9M units Worldwide (january 09)

PS2 selling 440k units Worldwide (january 09)

Compared to the first 4 weeks of 2009

Wii sold 1.25M units Worldwide (january 08)

PS3 sold 875k units Worldwide (january 08)

360 sold 610k units Worldwide (january 08)

PSP sold 1.1m units Worldwide (january 08)

DS sold 1.8m units Worldwide (january 08)

PS2 sold 746k units Worldwide (january 08)

Which means year over year for the first 4 weeks/sales charts of the year

Wii Sold 390k MORE units Worldwide then previous year. INCREASE of 31%

PS3 Sold 137k LESS units Worldwide then previous year. DECREASE of 15%

360 Sold 375k MORE units Worldwide then previous year. INCREASE of 61%

PSP Sold 176k LESS units Worldwide then previous year. DECREASE of 16%

DS Sold 100k MORE units Worldwide then previous year. INCREASE of 5%

PS2 Sold 306k LESS units Worldwide then previous year. DECREASE of 41%

Meaning as a company

Nintendo Sold 490k MORE units Worldwide then previous year. INCREASE of 16%

Sony Sold 621k LESS units Worldwide then previous year. DECREASE of 22%

Microsoft Sold 375k MORE units Worldwide then previous year. INCREASE of 61%

So if you look at the figures you see the Wii and the 360 pretty much both sold the same extra amount over the same period last year with Wii selling 390k and 360 selling 375k. Which shows the too consoles continue to grow at a rapid rate. Where as the Sony brand is falling away in all sectors most notibly the PS2. I think being 621k down in just 4 weeks is pretty horendous really.

Of course succes can be argued this wa and that depending on which numbers and percentages you use... like the X360 has fallen comparitively more from Christmas sales than the PS3. but the X360 is still increasing it's lead... but the PS3 is still ahead with aligned launches, etcetera etcetera.

I am just trying to teach people here to make sure they look at the whole picture.

PS3 selling 137k is not that bad as they didn't have a price cut in 08 wen there competitor the 360 did the real story is how well the wii is doing

Also the ps2 did around 300k less while 360 did around 400k more did potential ps2 owners go to the 360 since the 360 price is pretty close to the ps2 something to ponder

The PS2 losses account for nearly 50% of Sony's losses this month (306k of the 621k down). Wonder if this is the sign the console might be discontinued this year?

No I doubt it this year.

It should still perform ok this holiday, then next year it will die off, with a little "last hurrah!" for Christmas 2010, and discontinued before the fiscal year starts in April 2011.

Even if it does really slow down this year, Sony will make sure they ship some in fiscal year starting April 2010.... because then they can use it to re-state their intentions of the "ten year plan"
