hmmmm ATHEISTS really do tend to hate on the religious, that actually is true. Agnostics like me are generally pretty tolerant, as long as no one tries forcing their religions on us.

But the second anyone says "jesus died for your sins" or something like that I feel really really creeped out.

Mind you to the non-religious any religion seems about as believable as any other mythology.

i remember this situation i overheard where this womans kid didnt wash their hands properly and shes inspecting them...and then she was like "What would Jesus Do?"

personally, i dont think jesus would have washed his hands.

He would however wash their feet

So fewer people hate gays, but they hate them harder?

While just about everybody hates atheists, just a little bit each?

If only there was a way to ... weigh the hate... in utils of hatred or something.

This is actually a fairly accurate portrayal.  Many people in the South dislike atheists, but they HATE gays.  Although things are changing in the South (quite a lot of migration here from Northeners, people from the West, and people from Mexico).  The people who migrate in tend to be a lot more relaxed about it.

The South will be a different place in 20 years (especially the more populace states like Texas, Florida and Georgia), I can guarantee it.  We will always cling to our guns and religion though.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

I don't find that 48% disapproving if there son married an atheist surprising.

I mean. A lot of those people likely expect atheists to not go on into the "good" afterlife and instead be stuck in the bad one.

Having your eternal soulmate stuck in eternal hellfire would probably suck.

It's not so much that most religious people HATE atheists.

It's just they're either

A) Worried about them

B) Question the judgement of someone who can't feel the presense of god in there life... which is as natural to them as seeing light or hearing sound.

C) The group who thinks they work for the anti-christ or have no morals, but this is the anti-gay group too.

D) Find most atheists preachy and smug as some love bringing up atheism when it doesn't matter or go out of their way to trash a religion.

As for why more people hate Atheists then Muslims?

There are a lot of people who believe in Christianity and other religions that don't believe that the only way to go to heaven by just following that religion.

Not beliving in god at all though... that might piss him off?

Also.  It's easier to convert people of a different religion.  Often times i think the converted are the only really religious people out there... as they are the only ones enthusiastic about their faith and accepting of others often times.

In the north, all the cool kids are atheist or agnostic.
I understand that completely. It seems that the North is agnostic or athestist and thus liberal. It's amazing that one nation can be this diverse.

See, I figured Moongoddess was joking, but then I thought you weren't, but then I looked again and you might be going for irony in the last sentence...

I'm confused!

Anyway, The North just tends IMO to be less ... vocal ... about faith.

And it seems plausible that more people hate atheists or admit to it because it's more accepted to do so, but the hate isn't as strong as it is against gays, etc.

I am joking but at the same time I mean what I say. New England and the Gulf states (Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia) are so different from each other, its not funny.

Athestists are disliked more because they are different spiritually where as gays are different because emotionally and physically (they like different things)
