Forums - Sony - Sony Boss Spits The Dummy Over PS3 Pricing Claims

Lol what are we all forgeting? PS3 is outselling the 360 2 to 1 in Australia if I am correct (I think).

But do you think sony is making a profit in Australia? PS3 is made in a country just above australia (like malaysia and china and i think even vietnam it is manufactured in... so shipping costs to australia should be cheaper too?) am i correct here?

Oh btw I see ps3 being sold with little big planet for $610 in Australia. I also see them being sold for $650 with LBP and HDMI cable. They are NOT $690.

we're on a sales website, look at the charts for 2 seconds before posting crap.  360 is outselling PS3 about 1.5 to 1 weekly and the LTD sales are about the same ratio.

They want to cry about something they should cry to their gov to drop tariffs, until then stfu with all the whining about price.

This was, arguably, the most intelligent post in this thread, it's a shame it was overlooked.

You can't merely say 'X' console cost 'Y' amount of dollars in the US and 'Z' amount of dollars in Australia and call it a rip-off. There are many more factors to consider.

It would have helped if twingo had given some links or indications about which tariffs these are, and how much they increase the price as compared to the US. One thing may be VAT, but I don't even know if that is included in the MSRP as it happens in Europe.

Yeah the last time the PS3 outsold the X360 was at the end of July last year, and it wasn't by very much.

@NJ5 - good point - where's an Australian when you need one...

True, and the way he phrased it obviously did not help, hence 'arguably'.
The main point being, simple comparisons using conversion rates doesn't paint the whole picture.

that's right, but comparing the competition's prices should give you a good idea.

We don't have VAT, we have GST which is 10%. Not much more than the sales tax in most states of the USA.

As for the shipping costs mentioned in another post earlier. I know everyone thinks that Australia is millions of miles away from everywhere, but as the PS3 is made in Asia and we are part of the Asia-Pacific region, it should be about half the distance and therefore cheaper to ship to Australia as it is to ship to the US or Europe.

I often wonder about that.

Perhaps that Australia only has about 30 Million people living in it as opposed to the 200 million or whatever in the US has something to do with it.

Working in Australian IT distribution years ago, I actually met Michael Ephraim and iirc he takes a lot to get riled up. Pretty easy going guy.

As for pricing, I bought the 40Gb MGS4 pack last year for AU$748. I can pick up an 80Gb + 2 games for AU$648 now. Prices have come down but thats probably more competiton than anything.

I bought a 360 elite pack - 120Gb + 4 games in Nov for AU$548. (Traded a PS2 + 14 games for $200 off). Pro packs are now AU$388, arcades are $AU299. Gold cards cost 70-80 for full year. Don't even ask what HD costs are.

By the way check out Smarthouse few offerings previously:

These stories are just as ridiculous as the current Sony ones. Nothing but guys trying to get headlines. Nothing to see here move along.

Price gouging? It's a video game system, with two other(three if you include PC) major competitors. What the fuck are they talking about? How do you price gouse in such a competitive environment? It's not like they are selling water or electricity or something that people need.
