Transformers and Shrek on one format will be a hit to Blu-ray. Frankly it is all out war. I would have to say that I enjoy films from Paramount and Dreamworks more than Sony Pictures, but I won't take sides. I want a player that plays it all.
| HappySqurriel said: Blu-Ray gained most of its support because it was going to be the format of the PS3 and people expected the PS3 to sell at a similar rate to the PS2 ... With Sony's initial release date of the PS3, and with it being a worldwide release, this meant that there would be 10 Million Blu-Ray playing PS3 systems in people's homes as of January 1st 2007; by January 1st 2008 the format war was supposed to be over because Blu-Ray was supposed to be on its way to being the fastest adopted format in history. Right now neither HD-DVD or Blu-Ray are selling at a rate which is particularly impressive and they're not selling at a rate which is that much different from eachother. I suspect that Paramount and Dreamworks took advantage of HD-DVD being the lower selling format to negotiate better licencing terms from the HD-DVD group than they could from the Blu-Ray group in exchange for being mostly exclusive. |
Not only that but Sony Pictures is a rival movie studio but this is a strategic move. They can always change their mind later I guess.
I highly doubt this is true ,why would they just commit to the losing format ?
Knowing that I can only get Transformers, and in the future Transformers 2 and 3 on HD-DVD will impact my decision.
HD DVD thus far has actually always had more of the movies I'd prefer hi-def versions of with Universal being exclusive to them. I won't be buying a standalone anytime soon of either format though I'd probably think about the HD DVD player for the 360 if I had a 360. For now, I will get an occasional blu ray movie but I also haven't avidly bought DVDs for years now since I found myself tending not to watch them (I still have a bunch in the shrink wrapping).
And in regard to the universal format players, all reviews I've heard of the first ones released said the quality of them is horrible.
To cash in my CC rewards points for $300 in Circuit City gift cards to purchase a 360 or not: That is the question.
I think its a bit early to say its going to lose diomedes...plus as someone else said, they can always change their mind. The only ones sorta screwed are those people that actually are part of either the HD-dvd group or the blu-ray group (aka I don't see Sony suddenly supporting HD-dvd, but the rest of the studio's can switch whenever they want)
Wow. The plot thickens. Not a big deal to me personally, as my choice(good ol' dvd) will still be getting everything under the sun. This is sort of like when Nintendo got Street Fighter II for the SNES.

Why do people buy the PS3?
Why do companies make games for the PS3?
These questions can't be answered my friend...
Before someone gets pissed.
Why did Capcom make Resident Evils exclusively for the Gamecube

Because even the "winning" format isn't doing that well. It's kind of like being the fastest snail in the race.Â
Also, I suspect a fair bit of money changed hands.
I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.
Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.
Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!
Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.
