I've been into PC and console gaming for almost 16 years,

I have a very high spec PC (quad core, 4gb ram, 8600GT etc) which plays the latest games on high settings but I still left PC gaming late last year and went with console gaming instead,

Not had one regret and am so glad I ditched pc gaming! consoles are for gaming, pc's aren't (imo), there is a reason the pc gaming market is declining year after year while the console market is breaking records every year!

Go figure.....

wow, what hole did you crawl from? PC is probably the fastest growing gaming platform! Just go take a look at the superior 2009 lineup of PC.

Sounds like your the one that crawled out of a hole! PC = superior 2009 games lineup my ass lmao.

PC Game Sales Plunge in 2008; Consoles Soar

LOL!, Shio just got owned with one simple link!

A blurb from the article I linked to:

The numbers also painted a somewhat grim picture of the PC games market. PC game sales reached $701.4 million or 29.1 million units, while console sales were $8.9 billion or 189 million units. Portable software sales were $2.1 billion, or 79.5 million units.

Yep, PC sure is the fastest growing!

Does anyone think that a person that doesn`t invest in a Pc will BUY a pc game? I think piracy is very easy on a Pc and MS and EVERYONE realises this and you first see late Pc ports(Mass Effect,DMC4,etc)...then unoptimised games(GTA4,etc)...then games only on consoles(SW the force unleased, etc).

Isn`t something going on with Pc gaming that is very obvious? And when you buy a gaming Pc,will you have money to buy games or will you pirate? But it`s not about you, isn`t it? It`s about EVERYONE with a gaming Pc and only a small % is buying, while the rest pirate.

But what about the ones that pay? If they buy a console and stay in the consoles area, imagine what will happen...every year the Pc market is losing sales because MS and Sony gain more casual and Pc gamers. MS is leaving the Pc market, but doesn`t make it official...they will make you play exclusive Pc games on Windows and not Apple and they will be very happy. The developers and publishers will not be happy with rising Pc piracy and decresing Pc players that actually buy games.

So enjoy the scraps that fell under MS table, they will not be any when the consoles gain the marketshare they need/had to get.

See above. You don't need to thank me for giving some actual info about PC gaming's state.

So if PC gaming did good in 2007, but bad in 2008, and is ridden with Piracy as said in Stan's post, that means it is in a good state?

PC is probably the fastest growing gaming platform!

How does that somehow show the PC game market growing???  Seems to say the opposite.  And if you think that it just means all PC gamers are pirating these days, well that's another reason why PC gaming and retail sales are declining... without developers willing to deal with piracy, where do the games and then gamers go?  Away from the PC.

every year the Pc market is losing sales because MS and Sony gain more casual and Pc gamers. You told me to see abovefor a look into PC Gaming's state, and that is what I saw directly inside what you quoted.  Looks like it is dying due to piracy and lack of sales... Hmmm.... fool.

@shio - I did provided you with my links...and it`s an ESTIMATED growth,not a real one. In 2007 - 910 million $...in 2008 - 700 million $...a 25% decline in Pc sales...I just wait for 2009.

And trust me,WOW has made tons of money, about 50% of those Pc software sales. And will only get worse for the Pc,now that MS is not interested anymore in making Pc games. You don`t see the big picture, but MS does. They packed up and left Pc gaming. Is it because they were making money? No,they were losing money. When the 360 reaches a specific number,it will be cheaper for MS to secure an exclusive game. And the Pc gaming will just stick to Wow/subscription based games and casual games like Sims and others.

Open your eyes...you just have to try.

ugghh, you really are ignorant.

PC Gaming is on a transition period - PC gamers are switching from retail to digital! This trend has been happening for years. In 2007, only 30% of PC's revenue was from retail... today that difference should be even bigger. And the most emerging gaming markets are PC-centric: Russia, China, South Korea, India, Eastern European Countries, etc...

Is it that hard to understand? It's funny you quote NPD figures, because an NPD spokesman has said that the retail numbers of PC tells nothing, and that PC is switching from Retail to Digital (I'm not bothering finding the source).

In 2007, WoW made "only" 10% of PC's total revenue.

The reason Microsoft is closing PC developing teams is because of their main objective, which is not PC. They needed to cut costs in the division, and so their "only" choice was to close down the PC teams, since the rest are working on Microsoft's own platforms (Xbox 360).

Do you have a strategy game on your computer? Try playing it at the lowest resolution and see how "easy" it is. This isn't a FPS where you could get away with a lot more.

Furthermore most IGPs out there would flat-out not run these games, the Intel kind which makes up the majority of the market. Its like scaling a game to run on the PS1 and PS3+, which is incredibly difficult to accomplish.

Is playing a strategy game on your computer at 800x600 or 640x480.....Much different than playing an Xbox 360 game on an SDTV? Since resolution is of utmost importance?

Vastly different. One is playable and comfortable the other is not. At those framerates and with such a small window of vision it would be extremely difficult to play the game properly and most people could not tolerate it, and the less game savvy they are the less they can tolerate it because it compounds onto the learning curve of the game especially for the absolutely fresh gamers. Furthermore for many its a negative experience which puts them off PC gaming in its entirety. The Xbox 360 can get away with running at a lower resolution because of the expected environment and genres designed to run at those resolutions. This isn't a question of nicety, its a question of playability and userfriendliness which you do not get with an IGP.

Tease.

@Shio, the numbers are a combination of ESA and NPD. Also, the article states "sales" not "retail sales." These groups track online sales as well, genius. They have ways of tracking sales that were made by Steam and other digital distributors.

Face it, PC gaming is on the decline, especially given the recent market conditions.
Also, of that 260 million, that includes worldwide PC gamers, and likely counts people who use their PC to play very basic internet games.

Do you know how many console/hand held gamers there are world wide?
There have been already over 200 million consoles/handhelds sold this generation. If you count the PS2 which is still a very viable platform, there are even more.

Also, contrary to popular belief, digital distribution does not make up the majority of PC game sales.
