Forums - Nintendo Discussion - 720p for Cutscenes, 480p for gameplay. Possible?

I was thinking, would it be possible to dynamically change the resolution that the wii displays in so that it will display 720p in cutscenes and 480p during gameplay?

I mean gt4 had, that it supported 1080i for gameplay, and 480p for menus. At least that's what i think.

That would be interesting but until either Nintendo or hackers confirm that the Wii was designed to run in 720p, I doubt it'll ever happen.

Pacman taught people to run around in dark rooms munching on pills while listening to repettive techno music and for that I somewhat idolise him.

Going as far back as the Atari 800, systems could change the resolution per scanline.
Going as far back as the XBOX, systems could display through component 720p.

Any proof/instances of the Wii displaying anything at 720p though?

This may be of some interest.

What does that have to do with anything?

If you've read the link you'll see it's an upscaler for non HD consoles(also non HDMI'd people) such as the Wii, PS2, GC etc.

"The Nintendo Wii is limited to outputting a 480p signal which you can purchase component cables for. While this will get the most out of what the Wii can handle using the HDMI Blaster to upgrade the signal to 720p did make a difference. The clarity of the signal was amazing and surpasses the component only signal. Just make sure to set your Wii to display 480p and wide screen in it's setup menu."

Hence why he thought it could be of interest in this thread.

That's an interesting product. I might get one when I get my own HDTV. How much does it cost?

not possible unless the Wii can output at 720p. ATM it is locked to 480p. Things may chnage in the future but i doubt it.

As already said the wii can only physically output a 480p signal.
