Forums - Nintendo - The Winter of n-Space's Discontent

Over the past couple of days, there have been a lot of wishful comments regarding Winter.

Winter is a survival horror game that n-Space unsuccessfully pitched to publishers, beginning at least two years ago. However, because it could not find a taker, the company apparently stopped at a short demo and did no further work on the game.

So what we have is a demo of a company whose one previous effort into more serious-themed gaming had a lukewarm reception not doing work for a couple of years and then essentially lamenting that no one would publish their idea.

This is akin to being unable to sell a book proposal, then lamenting that no one will be able to read your still unwritten book.

Meanwhile, another company without a rich history or a publisher but with a good idea kept plugging away at its game. That game will be published by Sega. It's the Conduit.

HVS got a publisher because it kept working -- both on the game and selling the game. Had n-Space done the same, we might not be wondering what might have been.

 

Just my thoughts on the matter. What are yours?

IGN made The Conduit possible. Without them I bet it wouldn't have a publisher, at least not one with as deep a pockets as Sega.

IGN might be trying to work some magic with Winter too. They have a link to a petition to get a publisher even.



True. But there was always something new to promote.

Right now, trying to get someone interested in a two-year old demo is quite a challenge. I wonder why this did not occur a year ago.

I agree Winter itself may not warrent the attention it's now getting. However the fact that people DO want to see these sorts of game on Wii is good for the industry to see.

Horror hasn't done too well so far on Wii, aside from RE4 but then what's been out has been crap (Obscure, Alone in the Dark). FF4 did well in Japan. I'd sooner see that than Winter and we have Curse Mountain coming too so developers might wait for those to gage interest before funding Winter.



 

Maybe it is not a matter of choice for n-Space. HVS somehow had enough funds to complete The Conduit without the backing of a publisher, but I don't expect every developer to be in a position to fund their own projects.

Well what N-Space should have done is let IGN reveal the "dark game" a year or 2 years ago when the wii was starved of upcoming games. Now that 2009 is so full of good third party releases no one really seems to care. The reason the conduit was so popular is because that announcement came at a time of a drought.

While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

Exactly. Right now it is almost crying over spilt milk or lamenting about what might have been.

If I didn't know better, I would think this is actually a ploy by IGN to disrespect the Wii by showing what it missed.

Are you an employee or an owner of a developer?  Yes? No?

 



Its easy to want something you know you can't have?

The game might be good, it might not who knows.

Amusingly if the Wii isn't short one genre of mature games it's Survivial Horror.

Likely due to the whole RE4: Wii Edition and Umbrella Chronicles successes.

Probably adds to the reason no one is picking it up.
