Forums - Nintendo - Heather Campbell's Assessment of the Wii from Play's 2008 Year in Review.

I bought 3 games last year I prefer to No More Heroes, which considering I only bought 5 games must mean NMH is a bad game right?

True one of those games was Metroid Prime 3, which was released the previous year, but then going by American release dates I could add Endless Ocean int if I lived over there, as I wouldn't have been able to get it for Christmas like I did here.

Games (retail) I bought this year, in order of my personal taste for greatness:

1. Mario Kart Wii
2. Battalion Wars 2
3. Metroid Prime 3
4. No More Heroes
5. Zack & Wiki

Endless Ocean would fit between MKWii and BWii if needed, while Lost Winds and Toki Tori would lie between NMH and Z&W.... and my only dissapointment of a game last year would sit way out in last place: Sin & Punishment.

I'm stuck thinking of random things... litterally I'm only seeing the word "random things" in my head at the moment.

...

Yep, I hear you

You just made me think about how many Wii games I bought in 08... in no order, but enjoyment (+) vs crap I(-)...

Bully (+)
MLB 2k8 (-)
Alien Syndrome (-)
Wii Fit (+)
No More Heroes (+)
House of the Dead 2&3(+)
Battle of the Bands (-)
Guitar Hero World Tour (+)

Fortunately, everything except for MLB 2k8 was a bargain bin game, and I did enjoy for a bit, but wore off quickly.

Wow... I really would only have bought 1 of those games (NMH) and the only other I would even consider is Wii Fit.

This is why the Wii is selling well, jst like the PS2 it has a wealth of games substantial enough that most people can find at least 10 games they want on it (and gamers like us can find considerably more)

Was the release cycle of the original Nintendo Entertainment System anything like this?  After Super Mario Bros came out, was there a three year period of mini-games and crossword puzzle simulators?  Was everyone embarrased when they went to Toys 'R Us to look for NES games?

Um... yes? 90% of the NES's games were pure casual "rubbish" with crud graphics and a budget of £5. The 10% that were gems went on to become the most successful franchises we see today - Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Castlevania, and so on. All of which abandoned Nintendo and went on to be major "hardcore" franchises on other consoles. Maybe we need another NES (the Wii) to fuel the "gem" franchises of the next three console generations.

Yeah, to be honest, the only regret of purchase was MLB 2k8. I should have gotten the Konami baseball game. Looks like I woulda had more fun with it. So far this year I've already gotten 3 games.

The NES stepped into a vacuum, though. A dead industry. If you wanted to develop a console game, you went to the NES, period. In this case, Nintendo stepped in and changed things that a lot of people didn't want changed, and thus you see the Wii suffer in that regard, of having been almost totally ignored by the big franchises for the first two years of its life, where only now are they starting to come around
