anyways, I think all members of federal/state government should have the option of deferring, taking less, or not accepting their paychecks. It would save a little bit of money, and it would make the lawmakers look good in the eyes of the public.

Lot's of countries pay state/local officials crap. Which is why their local officials are always looking for bribes.

Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

that's why it would be optional. If you need the money, then by all means take it.

Here lots of lawmakers are already rich, so its a drop in the bucket for some of them.

If you don't need it, donate it to charity. Otherwise they'd be pressured to forgo their salary, and that's what drives people into asking for bribes. Take a certain Gov from Obama's state for example.......

Where's the pressure coming from? The Blagojevich guy didn't accept bribes because he was poor. He was soliticing bribes because he was a douchebag. That's apples to oranges.

Barack Obama is freezing the 100+k salaries of white house staff already. Are they going to be accepting bribes?

Arnold Schwarzenegger is doing the same thing and not accepting his governor's salary. No one else in California is being pressured into not accepting their salaries, and I'm pretty sure Arnold isn't tempted into taking bribes.

I don't think I've ever heard Tyrannical say something positive. Ever.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

No, Blagojevich was soliciting bribes because he wanted money. He even specificaly requested a high paying consulting job for his wife.

Even St. Obama appears to have used his position to get a sweetheart deal on that Mansion he bought from his convicted felon friend.

But I suppose that's just typical Illinois politics.

For foreigners as me it is kind of funny to read all those discussions if Obama is born in USA or not. So what?

And what is bad about closing -' Shut down Guantanamo Bay'

The president has to be a natural born citizen, so one major way to try and discredit him is to add to his "scary foreigner" persona that the tin foil hats uber-conservatives have built up

I don't think any government official in america is living on the streets. Its still apples to oranges.

So what is your official position then, make sure everyone is paid MORE?

I'm simply saying that if someone is in a position to voluntarily forgo, or at least defer their salary, they should go ahead and do it. It would mean a lot in this recession.

I like how you use this opportunity to needlessly drag Obama into the mud.
