'New' Mario Kart comes from unexpected Source

The Source engine, created by Valve Corporation in 2004, has been one of the most successful videogame engines ever. As a result, there has been a vibrant mod community for the engine since day one. In the past, Nintendo 64 games have been popular to recreate using the source engine, with notable examples being Goldeneye: Source and Perfect Dark: Source. The trend of Nintendo 64 remakes on the Source engine is about to continue with Mario Kart Source. The Mario Kart Source Project Manager outlines what is to be expected from the mod inside.

                                  

“Mario Kart Source aims to bring the fun and excitement of the Mario Kart series to the PC though the powerful Source engine used in Half Life 2. We hope to create the ultimate version of Mario Kart (MK) by combining all of the best aspects into one game. We're not simply recreating one version of MK, but using the best parts of each. We want to have all the traditional weapons, characters, and maps but also bring out new weapons that make game-play interesting. We're redesigning the maps so that they keep their appeal, but truly utilize the power of the source engine. We plan to have at least 16 different characters, all the ones you know and love as well as some others from the Super Mario World.”



Fun and games aside, how Nintendo will react to this breach of copyright is another question.

I would imagine Nintendo let Goldeneye and PD slide because they were done with them. I'm not sure if they'll let this happen

I can imagine this being amazing fun... IF there was a decent controller for a PC, personally i'll stick to mario kart on consoles.

I remember people made a near-exact replica of the Facility from Golden Eye for CS (the main difference was a connection between two rooms, I don't feel like explaining where). It wasn't long before that got C&D'd though. It was extremely popular for the short time it was out though.



By life end:

  • Wii- 100 million+
  • Xbox360- 35~40 million
  • PS3- 30 million
  • PSP- 30~32 million ------------- FAILURE
  • NDS- 85~90 million (Skeptical)  - FAILURE
  • NDS- 100 million+ (Optimistic) -- Success!

If it's not being used for commercial reasons, would would Nintendo sue? Oh wait, they're greedy, I forgot.

Seriously though, good volunteer projects like this should be supported, not put down.
