It is 2007 logic, though. Probably predates hits like Guitar Hero III, or the surprising sales of the horribly gimped Rock Band, though it was after the astounding sales of Sonic and the Secret Rings

 

EDIT: I'd like to add that if it were a recent article, i would be more than happy to point and laugh, but the evidence of 3rd party success (outside of Secret Rings, which could be brushed off as a fluke) wasn't quite there yet
