How so? While MS and SONY saying the Wii isn't competing is an exaggeration, the Wii is not competing with the PS3/360 as much as those two compete with each other. The Wii isn't selling for the same reasons...certainly.The PS2 also had a DVD player...which helped it sell a lot.

I'm saying that the Xbox and Gamecube were not nearly as daunting in terms of competition as the PS3 and 360 are.

 you mean like the blueray player in the ps3?? cmon sony wanted the ps3 to do the same as the casual ps2 did. but it got beat bad by the actual game machine in the wii. the wii in fact is more a game machine then the ps3 and xbox360.

However, the wii will outsell the Ps3 in hundreds of months worldwide.  I think the GC outsold the PS2 in a few months worldwide too.
