He means the game itself. Who do you think has a better chance at enjoying the Dark Knight? The ignorant watcher that didn't know everyone is calling it the greatest movie ever, or the guy that had to hear about it for months before he got to see it?

When hype is done with a foot in reality, there's nothing wrong with it. Hell, even taking a step or two out of reality is undertandable.

However, we've come to the point where Little Big Planet, a critically acclaimed, double platinum, 2D platformer is considered by some a failure because it didn't live up to "the hype" - ie sell 5-7 million and move 3 million PS3s out the door.

Games are limited in what they can do. They rarely can expand far beyond the genre's base (ie there was no way a 2D platformer was selling 5mil), and even more rarely have a big impact on weekly console sales. When hype starts putting these extra burdens on a single game (or series of games), it sets it up, unfairly, for perceived failure.

Microsoft gives two very useful tools for determining how good a game really is. The gamer card on forums and the box art on the NXE friends list. I can see whos playing what, and if a lot of people I know are playing a game I will definately check it out, even if I know nothing about it.

Something that hasn't been mentioned yet. It should be noted that the OP used the term "ridiculously" to describe the level of hype PS3 fans put on the games, and he didn't mean it maliciously either. That should tell you all something about how bad it's gotten.

hmmmmmm well if let say for e.g saintsrow 3 it is claimed to be a "GTA KILLER" and is said to out sell gta4 but then saintsrow 3 sold let say 6m combined for both console ppl will still call it a failure because it didn't do what ppl taught it would despite it having a pretty good sales?

Yup now you're getting it. It's called overhype. While it did very well for itself, it never reached what it was supposed to reach based on the hype. This is the problem with many of the PS3 games here. Dodece really put it best though. Just read his response.
