Forums - Microsoft - Achievements?!?

I wish achievements didn´t exist because the remaining ones make me think of how to achieve them during my game sessions instead of enjoying the game. Just like a walkthrough that takes away all fun if you read more than what you are looking for. And the thing is I don´t have the time to play games more than once, so I have to unlock most achievements in the first playthrough. On the other hand when I unlock an achievement I didn´t read about I am pleasantly surprised.

I do not get why a lot of my fellow gamers like achievements.  I could care less about them.

Before anyone goes all off, I own all of the current consoles and hand helds. I have my own personal tastes, but I try family friendly and Christian friendly games on all machines.

For those that like achievements, please explain it to me.  What do you like about them? Do you use that to pick up chicks? Does it help passing the driving exam? Do you use it in conversation anywhere?

Do you get any real money for any achievements? Free games? DVDs? Something? Is it just a look at me I'm Sandra Dee?

Most of the gaming sites talk about achievements like its the greatest thing since the Holy Bible. Not one has ever explained why its so great. And I don't get it.  Esplain it to me.

Who cares if you couldn't care less about them?  Since you don't care about them they're automatically not important since obviously your word is law?

Do you use the fact you're a gamer to pick up chicks?  Does being awesome at SSBB or Halo help you pass the driving exam?  Do you use your gaming experiences in conversation anywhere?

Do you get any real money for getting past level 8 in Resistance?  Free games for making a level in Little Big Planet?  DVD's?  Something?  Is getting 100 lines in Tetris a look at me I'm Sandra Dee?

Some people just like to collect achievements.  Just because you don't like it or understand it doesn't mean they're pointless.  Pointless to you perhaps, but not pointless.

Achievements are good cause you can brag about something you'v done in a game,IE L4D I beat the entire game on EXPERT took me weeks but i finally did it,now i can brag :)

Not to mention they make your score bigger, and the more achievements you have it generally gives people the idea that you play games alot.

And what the fuck's up with Pokemon? I have absolutely no desire to "catch 'em all"!

I would like achievements more if they unlocked an additional game element. Point in case has to be the GTA games where doing things x amount of times would unlock something, the unique taxi, gunship, plane, clothing etc. GTA 4 offers achievements for doing various things but no new content!

Also achievements for doing some of a games most basic elements or completely mandatory ones! WTF

I do like achievements but they are slightly meaningless!

I completely understand where you are coming from.

It makes you play the game in ways that didn't think of before. It made me play more of the game I bought. Motivation.

Makes you?  Are you hooked up to electrodes that will electrocute you if you don't?  Are you telling me that games control you, not you control them?

I also think they offer good motivation while playing the game. It is always a nice feeling, particularly when your going through a bit of a boring part of the game, to have that little message pop up. Gives you some sense that the game is progressing. Poorly planned out achievements can actually be among my low points in a game, say Earth Defense Force 2017 where there are only 6 of them.

We differ here my friend.  It annoys me to get a pop up telling me I did something like sing so many Lips songs in a row.  I don't even pay them any attention anymore.

Good point thank you.

They are gaming while gaming, sort of a meta-game. Like hot chocolate on a chocolate pudding.

Current-gen game collection uploaded on the profile, full of win and good games; also most of my PC games. Lucasfilm Games/LucasArts 1982-2008 (Requiescat In Pace).

they're fun to get and add extra re-play value to games. If there's no achievemets, theres no reason to re-play most games.
