Nobody goes out, and kills these things for fun, and in NL I believe its illegal to kill then for "Sport" but Im not sure.... Also in most places, only adult seals are allowed to be killed, which are Greyish black, and not white... And even then, they are killed for a loving, providing blubber, skin, bone, and meat for sale.

I think you should take a similar approach to this as me, and allow them to read up on something that isn't spread by celebrities to improve their public image.  I would prefer any of the anti-seal hunters to become well informed on the subject, then come back to the conversation so they could have a legitimate debate about the issues at hand.

BTW the Seal population is doing just fine through all this hunting...

EDIT: In NL Clubbing is almost non-existent, as of late, guns are used instead. The Younger seals are not even allowed to be killed if my memory serves me right....

 

This was typed in consideration those people do it as a job, not survival as the Inuit as a dude pointed out (these guys deserve espect). Chicken, beef, all that is also a type of survival... food's a necessity, furs aren't to people livingoutside fo those cold zones.

However... other people who do it for expensive furs and profit in general... not survival... well.. what can I say...? hopefully their end is similar.

 

 

Excellent point, do you know what types of rammifications will come from the complete stoppage of a seal hunt.  A decline in the number of seals taken will directly impact the fish populations in one of the largest commercial fishing zones in the world.  The problem with attempting to change matters like the seal hunt, is we will be throwing off a finite ecological balance that has existed for centuries and there is no way to predict what types of problems would be created.

oh... I was under the impression that these people did it for fun. Well that changes some things, thanks Rendo. So in a way it is just like us and, let's say wild game birds.

They are also not allowed to club baby seals, but that is a stigma that is nicely pushed forward by PETA and their band of celebrity attention whores.  The biggest problem with the seal hunt is the government of Canada and the seal hunters do nothing to improve their public image, but the anti-seal clubbing group spends lots of money on destroying the public image of seal hunters.

I think the best part of this argument is that the inuits have 'rights' to club seals. I imagine they only have these 'rights' because they live on land that no western european wanted, so therefore we can afford to be magnanimous.

Anyway, I personally don't care about clubbed seals or clubbed hunters. In fact, I club Dogs I adopt from the humane society for two reasons. 1. Population control 2. Cheap sustenance.

The seal hunt is probably less cruel than most other forms of hunting. A club to the head kills a seal quickly and cleanly. A bullet to big game will often not kill it quickly at all.
The only reason seal-clubbing has such a bad reputation is because the physicality of it disgusts humans naturally.
