But JP is doing the better than NA + EU right?  I thought the strong yen was a good thing.

I'm not calling on strong or weak yen at the moment. Japan has been in an economic depression much longer than we have, and because the rest of the world suffers too now, it might take even longer for Japan to recover from it. Therefore, if i was Sony, I would release a 40 gig cheaper version with the demo and the movie..now that would mean huge sales..

Hmm thinking about it - SE and Sony should have thrown FF VII into the bundle since ps1 games work normally on ps3.
