Forums - Sony - Aha! What they should do on the next PSP.

Anyone who had modded around with there psp a little bit knows that games can be played off the Memory stick if it is large enouph. In fact it plays better then the UMD with loading things that would normally take 10 - 20 seconds in 2-3 and not only that, It takes much less battery life to run from the memory stick.

Umd, while working ok is a big flaw for PSP. Developers need a way to sell there games though somehow in a store considering not everyone has the means to download a game from the web on to a psp, or a way to store it if they have a minimal computer, so umd was needed.

Why not just make the games for PSP2 on a memory stick. Most games rae only 600 - 800 MB and 1 gig sticks are dropping down in price and are already pretty cheap. The psp2 itself could have 2 stick slots 1 for your standard stick to hold music game saves etc. and one for the game iself. Then assuming they use the same design as the old psp what the could do is instead of a UMD tray, redisign the inside of that try to hold Memory Stick games instead.

And what of piracy?

it definitely needs an application store like Ipod touch/i phone

What about it? Not like the UMD stopped it at all. It's up to sony to make the system protected like they did with a ps3.

Im not saying you download the game, im saying when you buy the game it's going to be like a cartridge only on a memory stick, which can also be protected, however its up to them.

when the 'game stick' is first insterted into your psp it will only work for that serial number. as it initates an mini install directly into your 'memory stick'

so if your 'memory stick' fizzles your s.o.l unless you want to go through customer support hassle

@ Spartan and DSi, lets not forget.

I don't know about using memory sticks

Assuming they use 1 gb, it would be a huge step down from UMD disks, which are capable of 1.8 gb as a dual layer. If we're talking about 2gb or up, then it'd be too expensive.

Well, if the Cell gets implemented in the PSP, then problem solved. You can burn BR's, but the Cell is a huge obstacle in hacking the PS3. It's just that memory sticks are very easy tools for piracy, and if Sony can't make a reliable protection system...

Going by the title, I thought the thread was about ideas for a-ha.

But on-topic I agree. The factors for non-disk based media have really improved since the N64 days. Cheaper, larger memory, smaller size, faster access, less moving parts, and power usage is always a pro.

Yeah but as stated the price for those sticks are going down and most games don't even use the 1.8 that's one them. Also expect a few more years for this and meh....its the next penny :P

The PS2 has more than 10x the capacity of the PS1
The PS3 has more than 5x the capacity of the PS2
The GC has 10x the capacity of the largest N64 cartirdge
The Wii has more than 6x the capacity of the GC

Taking even the lowest number here, 5x 1.8 GB = 9GB = one hell of an expensive memory stick, even in late 2010/early 2011 when the PSP2 is released

Or, if it has 2 gb memory sticks, the PSP2 will not be able to have better looking games than the PSP, unless they want to reduce the length of the game from the length of PSP games like God of War
