Forums - Nintendo - Top 10 worst decisions by Nintendo

1. N64’s Dream Team -

The Ultra 64 Dream Team appears to have been an attempt to keep third party developers after some of the other tactics that Nintendo had previously used (required exclusive contracts) had been ruled illegal. Not great but not necessarily bad.

2. Virtual Boy –

This was a true disaster.

3. Proprietary N64 Cartridges

Conservative Nintendo created something difficult to deal with here.

4. Nintendo's dealings with Sony

Nintendo had no choice but to get out of this bad contract.

5. Nintendo's dealings with Philips

Nintendo got into this deal because it sought to avoid what became Mistake No. 4 after it got out of the deal that is Mistake No. 5.

6. Outsourcing & Reprioritizing of First Party Titles

It has been trying to find good second-party developers since Rare stopped being Rare (which is why Nintendo sold them). Some efforts have been better than others. It appears it has recovered from overmilking some franchises though as the Wii has only seen one Mario Party in over two years.

7. Gamecube

On the good side, the console is indestructible (if dropped while playing, the game continues without a problem -- this has occurred in the back seat of my car when traveling with my son). And it brought us the Wavebird. But the purple lunchbox appearance led to it not being taken seriously by many gamers (since it was not black like the PS2 and Xbox). Again, conservative Nintendo went non-conventional

8. N64 Disc Drive –

Delayed to the point of being unimportant.

9. Famicom Disc System –

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famicom_Disk_System

Wikipedia refers to it as "years ahead of its time" and says 4.5 million were sold. According to the article (and I will grant source issues with Wikipedia), the game releases were a year or two before cart-based ports with password or battery back-up of games.

Seeing people post about what should have been on the current system (HD, trying to please people too much) show that people don't always understand why the Wii and DS are super-successful.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

So it's "worst" in the sense of "most harmful"

I suppose that works. Really i just think GameCube (and Xbox) was doomed from the beginning. A year after a PS2 that pretty much everyone was already committed to. Timing was key to determining the victor last gen, quite simply. Dreamcast out too early, GC and Xbox too late. Thus, Nintendo's decisions in the GC era were really only harmful to their minor loss to Microsoft (which was a pyrrhic victory for MS, as they bled $5 billion to get 1% ahead in marketshare)
