Nah.. i don't see it happening, PS3 is the N64 of this gen, sure, it'll have some great games...
Ps3 owners, did you like little big planet and MGS4? enjoy your very own legend of zelda and banjo kazooie, more will come, but it just won't catch up (that's how i think it'll be, i wish i'm wrong since i really love some of sony's IPs)

Our Banjo-Kazooie is Ratchet and Clank, but what's our Legend of Zelda? Saying MGS4 is LoZ is pushing it just a tiny bit...

Also, saying LBP is Banjo is pushing it.

I meant they are some of the highlights of your system

Now don't get me wrong, they are not the only ones, more are to come (the N64 had some really good games). The point is: I was comparing the PS3 to the N64: arguably better hardware, but no ease of programming at all, third parties abandoning it (ok, maybe not abandoning it, but there is less support, can't deny it), the company counting on brand recognition and snobbing developpers... I just don't see it catching up

I don't wanna look like a fanboy, i don't even like microsoft, and I have PSOne, PS2 and PSP. This is just the way I see it for the PS3, It's uphill, but you'll still get a ton of great games from sony, and multiplats, I just don't think it will have universal support like ps2 in which every game had to be on (except for halo and mario, lol)

Listen to the voice of reason, then do as I say.

I'm going to have to disagree with the OP. With more development aiming for Wii and XB360, the PS3 library will be taking a hit. Unless a severe price drop occurs, there's nothing going for the PS3 in 09, except a few core games, but they wont push console sales. It'll do ok, but its pretty clear that the Wii has no signs of slowing down, and the XB360 is still holding steady. It would take significant slumps in Wii and XB360 sales and a large boost in PS3 sales.

Success for a console in the videogame industry is heavily influenced by expectations of success; being that games take a long time to develop, and you have to choose the platforms which will give the best returns on investment based on projections on how it will perform. We have already seen how this can impact platforms being that the PS3 received much stronger third party support than its sales justified, and the Wii received much weaker third party support than its sales justified, primarily because people expected the generation to turn out quite differently.

Being that we’re now 3 years into a generation and somewhere between 40% and 60% of all consoles that will be sold this generation have already been sold most people are expecting the generation to end in a similar fashion to how it stands today. What this means is that the necessary cornerstone for a PS3 comeback (a steady stream of high profile third party exclusive titles) is not going to happen and therefore a comeback is remarkably unlikely.

IMHO, in a bad scenario, but not the worst, for Sony, where it manages to keep the gap under 10million, but not reducing it under 5million, as MS has more cash and could bash Sony at a retaliation game, Sony could be content keeping PS3 on the market at least as long as XB360 (so retiring it one year after, as it started one year later) and surpassing it during the last years, maybe just the last one, so MS could be content being second during all XB360 life and wouldn't retaliate, while Sony could save the face becoming second of this gen during its whole lifespan.

It could depend on how the consoles do in Asia. FFXIII and FF Versus XIII being exclusive to the PS3 in Japan already mean that the PS3 is going to beat the 360 in Japan. That is a done deal over and out. Even more so than the fact that the PS3 isn't likely come back on the 360 in the US unless some extended gen for the PS3 versus a new Microsoft console scenario as I've already painted comes about.

I do believe the PS3 will do better than the 360 in Europe with a price cut. Would MS counter the price cut? Probably, but it took two substantial price cuts for the 360 to be able to outsell the PS3 in Others late last year.

I don't know how these consoles are going to do in Asia, if the Asia trend follows the way things go for the PS3 in Japan, then it could very well get second place based on a stronger following in Asia (Korea, China) alone though.

Well, there is probably (roughly) 5 or 6 years of "decent" sales for the market leading console and 3 to 4 years of "decent" sales for the trailing console ...
