Forums - Sony - Could Apple end up buying Sony?

In the overly done doom and gloom messages for Sony, there is talk of Sony leaving the console business. Well, Playstation is an established brand name, and had been the top videogame name in the PS1 and PS2 eras. Because of this, and Apple supposedly having a large cash reserve, if things do faulter for Sony in 2009, could anyone see Apple stepping in and buying up Sony? I do see synergy here between the two companies. It would give Apple a chance to get into the videogame business, and the next generation PSP could end up being a fusion of PSP technology with the iPhone. Again, this is arguably the worst case scenario that probably won't happen, but just speculating here. If not buying, maybe a merger happens. Or, outside of that, Apple partners with Sony to get into the videogame business. Comments?

I actually wouldn't mind this

but with Steve Jobs probably going out of Apple who knows what will happen to APple

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

First of all Sony wont leave the console buisness with just one defeated gen and second If Apple was to approach Sony they would most likely partner with Sony to give the competitors a run for their money.

why would a succesful company like Apple want a cash bleeder like Sony in thsi economic climate?

While I don't see it happening, it would certainly be a nice slap in the face to Microsoft

The only part of SCE I see Apple interested in are potentially the studios, which Sony is probably not going to sell... Even if they did, Apple would face a lot of competition for those, from Microsoft for example.

If you have cash surplus and want to grab established brand names, you look into it. Playstation is an established name in the videogame console business. And Sony has other brands that fit into that. In the battle to grab marketshare, you do things like that.

I think Apple might be more interested in Sony's movie and music assets than anything else.

But I'm not sure if Sony's ready to sell yet anyway. They might be in tough shape, but they haven't even taken a good shot at restructuring yet.

Im just saying in the current world economy it isint like big companies to take risks, especially Apple with all their recent success, they wouldent be the ones to want to do anything to fiddle with that.
