Forums - Gaming - What is a hardcore gamer?

This whole distinction between hardcore gamer and casual gamer has led many astray, I believe. It would seem to me then that the main difference between these two terms is the amount of time a gamer plays, and the level of fascination/fanaticism said hardcore gamer exhibits when playing. As a general rule, posters on these forums are hardcore gamers. Why else would we be on a gaming site? I just think people are taking this "hardcore" gamer label to refer to mature content or photo realism. The result of this, of course, is that when the press refers to the hardcore gamer as a dwindling portion of the gaming community, hardcore gamers unite and declare that the sky is falling. I think only good things can happen as games become more mainstream. For instance, more money being poured into games. More time being given to dfevelopers to create quality content that will capture everyone's attention and money. Anyone else care to weigh in?

Good post. I'll only weigh in to say that Hardcore Gamer is an oxymoron.

Kwaad...how does liking Animal Crossing or Mario make someone a casual gamer?

Why are you so focused on image? Are you overcompensating for something?

Well I play everything there but dora the explorer. And actually I think stuff like Feel the magic, brain farmer, and crap like that are for the casual gamer. And Every time I play one of those. I put it down in 10 mintues... or if I beat it. 1 or 2 hours. And never play it agian. becuase it is so simple and un-complex, that it has no replay value... I'm not paying 30-40$ for a 1-2 hour long game unless it is sick fun.

I am a hardcore gamer, I want all systems and like to play games and buy them each gen. I enjoy to play them for hours and keep up on industry trends. A casual gamer is just someone who plays them every now and then and doesn't really follow the industry much. IMHO. But I think hardcore gamers are rising part of games and rise all the time, more and more people are getting into them and are becoming hardcore as they now want better and better games.

Do you play shmups, especially bullet hell? Do you play "cult" games? Do you import, especially hardware? Do you own a Sega Saturn? Do you play old games on a regular basis? If you answered "no" to any of the above then you're assuredly not hardcore.

Then less than .5% of gamers are hardcore. And hardcore gamers have ZERO impact on the gameing industry. I import PC games often enough. And I import some japanese games. There is a good chance I will start importing games for my PS3/PSP. how old? because I play breakout all the time. Oh yeah, and for Cult games. http://egosoft.com I play X.

See how subjective the difference between Hardcore and Casual is?

So you're hardcore? Well I know of many a forum where people would laugh their asses off at you claiming to be "hardcore". They'd mock your love of FF7, because real FF fans hate that piece of shit. They'd laugh because you've never heard of, let alone played, DonDonPachi. Think 3d is better than 2d, then you're a fag. You don't own Rez, then you have no cred. X isn't good enough, real Hardcore gamers play Fallout Importing Japanese games for NeoGeo is the only way to be, PSP/PS3 are too recent See how stupid "hardcore" can be as well as getting swept up in image? Oh, and Breakout is simple, which by your own admission you hate those types of games
