Why the hell did Mystic Quest have a jump button? That's kinda hilarious.

The game was slightly Link to the Past-ish also. You jumped over gaps, and pushed blocks to jump over more gaps. A lot of gap jumping.

I bought it because of how coll the cover looked. I thought it was a DMC-style adventure game then when battle came, I was thinking WTF? I almost returned it. It was the story that made me decide against returning it then I just got used to the battle system and JRPGs became my fav genre
Huh? Did you play FF VIII that late? Otherwise how would you have thought it was like a game that wasn't invented yet?

Playing Devil's Advocate, perhaps he thought it was an adventure game in the style he has since come to identify as DMC-like.

But wasn't DMC the originator of the style of adventure game it was? Everything similiar(Heavenly Sword, God of War, Ninja Gaiden, Ninja Blade) all came out after. What was out before DMC that was like DMC?

Dynasty Warriors?

I could be horribly wrong, but I can't really tell the difference.  You get surrounded by enemies and use spin attacks and combos to get out, right?

Sorta I guess. However Dynasty Warriors' trademark is throwing 50 braindead AI enemies at you all at once and have you slash at them while two or three confront you and the others sit back and take hits. The other hack n slash games of DMC variety contain enemies that all fight back and have the ability to actually get hits in. Also the difference in difficulty is night and day. Dynasty Warriors can be played blindfolded and you'll still win while the DMC-like games are actually all generally pretty difficult.

Ah okay.  I guess that's why one series only has 4 games and the other has 400.

Was DMC really the first good 3rd person hack and slash though?  Timing-wise that seems weird.  I feel like something should have beaten it by a generation.

All signs point to Devil May Cry being the grandfather of this subgenre. I really can't think of anything similiar that came out before it, but imitators definitely popped out of the woodwork following it.
