Forums - Sony - Nikkei: Sony expected to post $1.12 billion loss

I think the PSP and PS2 numbers could come in below estimates. The PSP has been doing rather poorly outside of Japan.

I guess then the question becomes how much of it is from the gaming division.

In Q1, the gaming division made 5.4 billion yen, in Q2 it lost 39.5 billion yen... For this quarter I would expect at least 20 billion yen in losses, for the next one I have no idea since it depends a lot on the Yen's strength.

That is bad alright It would make you wonder why a company would stay in that buisness.

I suppose you have to take the good with the bad.

You think so?  They reported that 39.5 billion yen loss at an exchange rate of 105 yen to the dollar, now it is much lower than that.  Holiday quarters are usually better because of higher PS2/PSP/software sales but i dunno if it can offset it that much.

20 billion yen is on the safe side... I wouldn't be surprised if it was two times that, it's much harder to predict individual divisions.

well its obvious why they stay in the gaming business.  Becuase like all companies Sony is only out to please its fans as much as possible.  They don't care about making money.

Pretty true.

How much have they lost before?

The loss would be only the second since Sony went public in 1958 and the first caused by troubles in its mainstay electronics business, the Nikkei said.

A one-time charge related to the company's U.S. film studio business was primarily responsible for the previous operating loss, reported for the year ended March 1995, it said.

@colonelstubbs

its not their fault the economy went down....

I still can't believe woolworths is gone...I was so shocked!

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

I'm wondering how similar Japan based electronics companies will perform this quarter.  This could be a bad sign for a large portion of the consumer electronics based sector.  Tech crash 09 anyone?
