What I find so sad about this thread is the sheer amount of facts about Sony huge financial loss, how it's the lead story on several news sites, and PS3 bots are like 'Well, it's ok. It won't affect our PS3.'

NJ5 stated it best - the world doesn't revolve around the PS3, nor Sony. So true.

If a poster creates a thread about Sony's current situation, it's called bashing. If a poster says the PS3 isn't the best thing since sliced bread, it's called bashing. If a poster isn't in amore with Sony and the PS3, it's called bashing.

Sheez, the writing is on the wall. Ninny and MS are making money - and yet Sony is tanking. Why, in light of their financial losses, the demand of shareholders and the like would Sony not trim significant fat off their gaming division, when it has huge losses? If it's a problem, financially, it requires an immediate fix.

Keep dreaming if you think the world worships your beloved PS3 so much that when excess luggage on a sinking ship is thrown overboard.

Face facts - Sony fans are in for a very, very bumpy ride. Mark my words.

If you mean by that fans of Sony TV's, Hi-Fi's and video machines then yes I agree with you.

Sony is more than the PS3, and the fans of gaming (in general) and the fans of the PS3 (specifically) shouldn't be too worried.

He's just saying that it's currently a losing division, and if they need to do an emergency restructuring, they will most assuredly will look at the game division to see how they can make it less of a money sink and more into a profitable division.

Sony is a huge symbol over in Japan, if anything the government might bail them out just like the car comapnies got bailed out over in the US. I doubt it will shut down, however I predict a bumpy future for anyone who is a fan of their losing divisions. A pretty bright one for the winning ones since they will focus even more on them.

Wow. Is this a serious question or are you being a smart aleck?

Really, I honestly don't know.

No. Sony isn't going to shut down within a year.

I struck through all tlhe speculation and bull.

And my response:

Yes, Nintendo and MS are making money, and Sony isn't.  Of course fat is going to be trimmed from the gaming division. Fat.  not meat.

PS3 = Meat

Fat = Sony Bend (Syphoon Filter), Liverpool (Wipeout (Which just got merged with Evolution (Motorstorm)) so that was fat trimmed, San Diego (NBA and MLB, NBA will probably be cut), and BigBig (Pursuit force, which tanked).  That's fat.  They're not going to trim 'meat' which are PSP/2/3.  Those are not going anywhere, neither are the big games.

Is Sony really a sinking ship?  No.  Things need to be restructured, which they will be, and that's what you do when things aren't working out.  Sony hasn't filed bankruptcy protection or anything yet, so for the near future at least, Sony is not a sinking ship.  It's just undergoing repairs, which tons of companies are doing right now due to the economy (side-note:  Why do we never talk about tons of other companies that are restructuring, and such?  Why do we only talk about Sony?  Tons of electronics companies are doing crap... x_x).

Will it be a bumpy ride?  Who knows?  We're having this discussion before the fiscal results come out.  Who knows?  SCEA could eek out a profit given they sold less PS3s than last year, and the ones they sold were at less of a loss considering the removal of the EE + GS, and how last year they were producing 90/90 80 GB, and 90/65 40GB, and this year, aside from the MGS4 bundle, was mostly 65/65, and 65/90 Core models, so the ones they sold were at less of a loss.  And they sold more PS3 games than last year, thus contributing to the bottom line too.  And though the PS2 and PSP sold less than last year, they're sold at more of a profit, since the PSP went 3k and got revised, and PS2 got revised 2x this year IIRC.  I mean, we could be talking about how bad SCEA is doing, when there is a possibility that they could be making a profit.  Remember last year, and how everyone was predicting huge losses for Christmas, and they made a profit?

Sony as a whole?  Yeah, let's talk abou them, but SCEA we need to wait until the Financials come out to comment.

I don't see how the game division is going to post a profit. The pre-october revision had a $300 million dollar charge due to currency losses for the game division alone. Since October, the currency situation has deteriorated far worse, which means that $300 million currency loss will probably be double or triple. On top of that, the PSP and PS2 seem to be under performing estimates.

Why couldn't we have just waited 3 weeks for the real numbers instead of speculating about an analysts report on the whole of Sony when we really only care about SCE?

Speculation is fun, but really aren't people just going over and over the same material? I swear I saw the same arguments in 3 other Sony threads about this same topic.

Tease.

The whole of Sony is important as well, look at how Sony supported SCE during these latest few years.

No one can stop the speculation machine, much like no one can stop the games hyping machine. We just have to accept it even when we don't like it.

I think the Nikkei source is a leak from Sony, not an analyst report.
