Pain is a mental thing in my opinion, I doubt this is actual affecting the nerves sensing the pain - its affecting the brains recognition of the pain sensed by the nerves.

^^You're not. I did a subject on pain once, interesting stuff.
Pain is a subjective feeling that we have. The actual physiological process that peripheral nerves are involved in is called nociception. Whether this process is affecting nociception or our perception of pain (the way in which many different drugs and pain modulating stimuli work) doesn't really matter as long as it makes you feel better.
I wondering if better binoculars would improve the effect.
