Forums - Gaming - Why I appreciate Nintendo making games for adults. (Rant ahoy!)

Frankly, as this generation matures, I find myself less and less interested in Nintendo. I absolutely adore Mario Kart but that's not a casual game. Just play someone who's good... I also love their classic franchises but after watching them turn their back on gamers like me in 2008, Nintendo has abandoned players like me. I love SMG, I love TP, I love MK Wii, but what have they done for me in the past 10 months? NOTHING.

I don't care what anyone says, I remain convinced that Myamoto jumped the shark with Wii Music. I hated Wii Fit, but at least I could see potential in that game. Wii Music is an instrument emulator for the mentally challenged. It's terrible. I hate it with every fibre of my being. Even my 8 year old niece thought it was stupid after she came off 2 hours of playing drums in Rock Band. That's a pretty bad indication of where Nintendo is going with this "casual" bullshit.

Anyway, to end it, I love the Wii and I love its potential. What I hate is Nintendo and its fascination with removing any sort of challenge from most of their games. That's not fun, that's just stupid. You're catering to a group of individuals who never liked gaming, view it as a fad, and might stop playing at any moment. While I think it's important to nurture these people and keep them gaming, dropping virtually all support for your core base in favor of these people is a bad idea. It may benefit Ninty in the short run but in the long run, they're really pissing off old gamers such as myself.

I think it's a bit harsh to blame them for so few releases in the past 10 months. They get critisized so often for dominating the software sales on their consoles and it appears that they were hoping that 3rd parties would pick up the slack for them like they did on the DS. Personally I'm happy to see what Nintendo have in store next now that they have had their big casual titles for the past few big releases. We did get a pretty good run early on with Zelda, SMG, Metroid, SSBB, MK Wii all fairly early in the console's life, I think people just expected that they'd keep that rate going. If they had then they'd still be critisised for not allowing 3rd parties to get any of the market and it may have even discouraged 3rd parties from developing for the Wii.

Now I don't own Wii Music, my sister does, but I haven't spent much time with it at all. That being said, while I have always pretty much always agreed with your posts, I have to disagree with you on this. Even though it's not a game for me and I don't get anything out of it, I don't think it's shit. You can get good results with it, but I personally don't have the patience to try and I would rather spend my time on other games or even learn a proper instrument. I won't accept that Nintendo has lost the plot just because of the release of something different like this. Wii Sports, Wii Fit & Wii Music may be the focus of Myamoto lately, but he's still overseeing most of the major titles under development by Nintendo. While I'd love for him to be primarily focused on the new Mario/Zelda or new core IP, his involvement in multiple teams will hopefully offer a better succession plan in the long run where some of his creativity can brush off on others rather than be so dependant on the one guy.

I do agree with the OP on the whole though. I bought an Xbox live gold membership because it was on sale when I bought Halo 2 for the Xbox. I used to play LAN mutiplayer with a friend of mine using vpn connections between ourselves but I always put off activating the Live membership until I felt confident enough that I'd be able to hold my own against people who were spending far more time than me on the game. Even my friend would play it every day after work where I would just get into it on the weekends and he would just pick me off 10 times before I'd even got my barings. That gold membership is still unopened in a box somewhere since I last moved, I have no idea if it will even work anymore. I still plan on getting a 360 perhaps when the Slim comes out, but until then Nintendo definitely have me covered.

One thing to consider ...

There are dozens of developers in the world Nintendo could get to create a new Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Kid Icarus, Starfox or Donkey Kong game that (with oversite from Nintendo) could be as true to the series as anything Nintendo could make. At the same time Myiamoto is in a class of his own when it comes to new gameplay experiences that resonate with gamers.

Gaming for 20-21 years? Pussy. I'm nearing 30 years of gaming.

While I appreciate your sentiment, not all of us suffer from old man's hands like you apparently do. I definitely don't have the reflexes of my 19 year old drunk spaz self from back in the day, but I can pick up almost any shooter and still hold my own. I don't need to win every round to feel like a man. With age, I've learned that it's more fun to just play the game and do well than it is to be ultra-competitive. I still enjoy a hard-fought match of Gears... Maybe not as much as my 8 hours a day CS marathons from 10 years ago, but I still find it fun in small doses.

PS. I saw Vagabond's last post. I have no problems with "evening the field" like they did in MK Wii. It makes for hectic racing, but 9 times out of 10, the best two racers still finish in the top three of every race. I don't mind that. I think Nintendo did a fabulous job with the online of that game by removing snaking and some of the "hardcore" maneuvres.  Still, the best people finish in the top of the game almost every time. Every once in awhile you'll get a nasty first-to-eleventh combo, but that's pretty rare. Next race, you'll be back on top if you're good. Unfortunately, MK Wii is the exception to Nintendo's gaming rule of late... While they "dumbed down" the title, they didn't dumb it down so far that it became impossible to distinguish luck from skill.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Rocketpig your opinion is dumb.

Not saying you're dumb, I just want to say that your opinion is dumb. In its face.

At least he has one.

Damning with faint praise?

Last I heard, like assholes, we all have an opinion. There's nothing challenging about having one. Backing it up with reasons is a little trickier.

I find myself in the same shoes as the OP, hardcore kid/teen gamer turn into family man with little time to play, i do not play online games like resistance, gears halo ect, because the time needed to be competitive, i don't have the time to play 4-5 hours per day, can't even do that per week now, and i don't like going online for 30 mins to be fodder, i find the only game this gen i have been able jump online and put up a good fight with lilttle playing time is Soul Calibur 4, i think mostly because i played Soul Calibur and Soul Calibur 2 alot and they have not changed the moves and mechanics much.

Systems owned: NES, SNES, N64, PS1, PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox360
