Only noobs use the package manager. True users compile everything from the scratch!

Wrong!

True users use the package manager. Tweackers compile.

We're in 2009 guys, if you read something about linux and say you should compile something, just avoid it. I would lead to chaos in your system (unless you're a tweaker and know what you're doing), I can give reasons if needed. Today, EVERYTHING is pre-packaged so you don't have to bother compiling, don't do the work twice.

And I really know what I'm talking about, I've been playing with Linux for more than 11 years now. I used to tweak and compile. Now I gave up on this stuff a bit, but what I can tell you is that "If it's not to understand how it works, you shouldn't be compiling something by yourself".

Doesn't package manager take out all the fun from playing with linux? :( I would say that if you compile something, it will not cause chaos in your system unless you are a total noob. That would usually be those people who think using linux is a cool way to show your disrespect towards ms.

Yeah, but the guy is replacing Windows with Linux...

I did do a little research. envyng-qt is labeled as being for KDE. However, I could not use envy in Gnome until I installed envyng-qt. After I did that, envy worked fine. Maybe I am just using it wrong, but it did the job without any problems.

Why would anyone use anything other than System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers (or something like that)?

ONE CLICK, and it installs and activates the ATI driver.

I don't know about ATI, but I had a very hard time installing NVidia drivers using "Hardware Drivers". One would think that I could use "Hardware Drivers" and be done with it, but it never worked. I worked at my NVidia drivers for hours until I found envy.

Package manager is nothing more than a way to handle programs in organized way. You can still compile your programs even if you use package manager. Just make packages out of those compiled programs and you will be able to uninstall and install them through your package manager with ease.

At present, I've switched back to primarily using Vista (regrettably).

I'm still toying with Ubuntu, but not as much.

Let's keep this thread alive for discussing Linux, perhaps, guys?

why not try out Windows 7 beta?  It's free and open for download

I did. My wireless NIC's drivers aren't compatible with Win7.

As a result, I had to (regrettably) revert to Vista. I tried WinXP, but my mobo has issues and it repeatedly goes all "wtf" every time it tries loading Windows during installation.

I'm thinking about trying installing Win2k, then upgrading from within. That may work.

Yeah I had the same problem with another computer of mine had to install Linux on it to get it to work again

My HDD's got a recovery partition on it for Vista, so no matter what stupid stuff I do, I can always get Vista back up and running properly.

It's nice to have, but I think it's part of why my system doesn't like installing XP - it was built for Vista.
