Forums - Gaming - Killzone 2: Why would anyone want to invade Helghast?

While I have seen a lot of people hating on the game, I think the Original poster wasn't. Sure the game is dark and dreary, but so was R2 and Gears 1/2 to some degree.

I'd tell you, but you seem so fixated on the graphics and such that there's no point to talk about the actual storyline from the Killzone games.

Graphics seem to be the ONLY thing being talked about regarding the game.  Is anyone talking about the story at all?  Has any information on the story been released?  That would help out here.

check the gametrailers preview, i think there's was a some footage of desert.

VGChartz seems to focus most on graphics from what I've seen. Neogaf and the Playstation boards have tons more info about the gameplay, which has also been getting lots of praise.

The two most common complaints I've seen about the game so far are the voice acting (not horrible, but not great either) and the controls which might not be fully customizable in the full game (most people want CoD4 controls).

The thread on Crysis having worse graphics than KZ2 had me looking at multiple videos and seeing an environment that looked like it was going to be uniformally miserable looking throughout the game.  All I could think is how much Helghan sucked and not sure why anyone would go there.  The trailers are now showing the variety of environment, which makes things more enjoyable.  It isn't a case of having bunny rainbow world, but how about SOME green, or some winter somewhere, or something, besides tons of dirt and grey.  This is a VIDEOGAME, not some high point of drama in a war movie, just an action film.

I will say there is potential for a great story here.  I happened to see through the intermissions from the original Killzone and opening intermission also.  The environments were also varied in the original Killzone.  It had snow, and was on a spaceship, and also trenches.  It wasn't just grimy and dirty cityscape.

Will KZ2 be at least as varied as the original Killzone in its environments?

Just because You say that a gritty settings isnt appealing doesn't mean it is XD
Its realistic, and ties in with the Helgan.
It would look awful if the Helgan came from the Jungle.
I want a realistic, gritty, detailed and powerful shooter that shows how war really is.

KZ1 took place on Vekta, a lush planet. Before they invaded it, the Helghast were forced to stay on Helghan. The horrible enviornment forced them to wear the masks to protect themselves. They weren't known as "Helghast" when they first arrived - Visari basically gave them the name, and encouraged them to fight to take back Vekta.

If Helghan was as nice as Vekta, the KZ devs would probably have to find another excuse for the recent wars.

Google is your friend: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killzone

I know where you are coming from though, I liked to be romanced to.  I need a little backstory.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

IGN's review code video showed that Rico's voice has been improved a bit (though I still like the 07 build voice better).

For controls, there are numerous configurations to choose from. You DON'T have to be limited to the R3 for ironsights. If it still has the same name like it was in the beta, the configuration called "Alternate 2" is the one you want to have R1 for shoot and L1 for ironsights (R3 will be melee).

@Richard,

Also, all the cut-scenes from the first Killzone are on youtube. They're not too bad and you'll get the storyline in the first game.

If the focus on KZ2 was on it being a great game, and not trying to be a foil for the 360, maybe more could be discussed.  But now, it is supposed to make coffee, walk the dog, bury Microsoft and make every Wii owner see the folly of their ways (and go high def), and save Sony.  That is they hype level on it.  So, there appears to be an obsession on the graphics here.  At this level, my wondering if the entire KZ2 game will be like the trailers, and wondering about the motivation for wanting to be part of the invasion, ends up getting treated as hate.

As far as voice acting goes, if they can bring back the Helghan leader from the original, and have character development/portrayal of the half-Helghan in the original, then it should be fine.

Also, let me get this out of the way here, people who are thinking hate hate hate on my end.  I believe the original Resistance has better graphics than Halo 3.  I also have UT3 on the PS3 and kept it.  I believe the cover system in Uncharted is better than the original Gears of War.  However, I find excess hype suspect.  I raise my expectation levels to the hype people like to spin things, and base it on that.
