@mibuokami: I think the part we may not agree on is where you imply that the audience for these violent/etc games is the same one as it gets older. That is of course partly true, but as you can see in this site, the current teenagers are very interested in these games too, while the Wii is capturing many of the older gamers (although of course people here often own more than one console, which rarely happens in the market as a whole according to NPD).

This is my impression and it may be wrong, but I don't see the so called "hardcore" audience being a more or less fixed group of people, it's very much fluid.

Yes it IS fluid! But has not been fluid for the PS1-2 era. The wii is the first console to change the perspective of what is a 'hardcore' gamer because its the first console to have a shifting target audience.

I don't think the Wii only has the so called casuals as its target audience... It's a console aimed at everyone, and Nintendo's game offering supports this.

As for what most third parties think the target audience is, that's another story of course... But things are getting better in this camp, and the party-games market is getting saturated so we'll have to see more creativity from the 3rd parties who wish to make sustainable profit from the Wii.

Nintendo's policy have always been family friendly and broad audiences. Name me one Nintendo game that is MA15+ beside their brief effort to be 'cool' with Rare? Nintendo's very policy both expand and limit their ability to please 'everyone'.

This is why I continue to support the PS360, I am selfish enough to recognise those system that caters to my taste more exclusively.

Nintendo published Geist and Eternal Darkness in the last generation, both of which were "Mature" titles

Again, I think it's not necessary to be rated M to be aimed at all ages and both genders.

Of course there is a segment of gamers who only play games with titties and blood, possibly both combined. Nintendo's Wii games don't target those, but some third parties do. Some of the most violent games are actually on the Wii, such as Manhunt 2 which is supposedly made more violent by the motion controls.

@HappySqurriel

My apologies, I have very little idea of the two game you mention, but the point remain the same. The majoritive of their titles catered to everyone and because of that they limit themslves to what is acceptable by everyone.

Certainly a game does not have to be M rated to be aimed at a certain gender or age but you will concede that MA15+ games are generally aimed at a specific age and gender?

I believe myself to be of that particular segment that love violent games. I do not love them to the exclusion of all else but you'll more than likely find the 'bloody' type of game in my library than not.

I believe you can admit that of these type of game the PS360s liberary is vastly numerically superior. I am not discounting the wii's appeal, just that because it target everyone, there is less targeted at my specific interest. And that is something that the PS360 has not done.

Again selfish by my taste never-the-less.

@mibuokami: I can't disagree with that, that is of course correct regarding the current libraries of each platform. Having said that I'm off to bed ;)

I would actually argue something quite a bit different ...

Nintendo has always been a lot more focused on pushing the limits when it comes to gameplay, and the style elements of their games of often chosen to accent their gameplay. As a result of this, only when it makes sense for a game to have more questionable themes do they pursue that approach.

In other words, Nintendo makes games like the Legend of Zelda and Metroid Prime as Teen rated games because it makes sense for the series not necessarily because they are against making "Mature" games.

You want a hardcore pre-video game? Cribbage, man. It's all about cribbage.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

it requires thinking unlike those casual mini games on the wii.

If "thinking" is the hallmark of hardcore games, then what is Heavenly Sword?
