It sold 40,000 more units than the Wii in Japan last week.

But only a third of the Wii's software.

Despite its large install base, game sales are really dramatic.

Only a third of what? PSP is still ahead of Wii in terms of software in Japan.

I agree 'game sales are dramatic', just look at the likes of Dissidia and Monster Hunter in Japan this week...

ConsoleWeekTotal
682,139 (-12%) 28,116,766
266,594 (-18%)

23,496,618

This is from Japanese Chart for Week Ending 03rd January 2009 on this site.

And here are the numbers from Dengeki -

Hardware | This Week | Last Week
Wii | 718,913 | 878,116
PSP | 415,422 | 433,612

Also, Japanese software totals according to Famitsu:

PSP 27,885,000
WII 27,424,300

Official Famitsu figures:

PS2 NDS PSP 360 PS3 Wii
2000 7,601,400
2001 18,817,400
2002 26,947,500
2003 31,519,900
2004 34,055,200 1,211,400 550,700
2005 29,084,000 11,753,500 4,179,300 89,300
2006 24,410,700 38,817,800 6,659,000 900,000 453,900 1,956,400
2007 13,262,900 39,130,600 6,750,200 1,368,800 2,951,400 11,665,700
2008 7,112,000 28,260,500 9,745,800 1,770,000 5,155,100 13,802,200
Total 192,811,000 119,173,800 27,885,000 4,128,100 8,560,400 27,424,300

As you can see, software sales on PSP have increased dramatically in 2008...moreso than on any other platform.

the psp is far from dead. Is it on the decline? eh thats debatable but there are still some high caliber games coming out this year and in 2008 we had a couple really nice ones.

either way theres still alot of older psp games i need to catch up on as well as the new stuff so i'll be playing mine for quite a while still

There's a ton of announced PSP games coming in 2009, and quite a few high profile ones. Just look at the Famitsu PSP release schedule, it's brimming with games - http://www.famitsu.com/review/schedule/pspsoft.html

@mai: Why not? Sony should go 3rd party and it would actually make money.

@Aj_Habfan: That's true that they are experimenting, but still, they aren't doing it for the PSP.
What Take Two looks, is that the best selling game on PSP is their own GTA:LCS, which is a five million seller and other games aren't even close (number two is VCS, below 3M), when DS has above 20M on Nintendogs, above 15M NSMB, Pokemon D/P and Brain Training and above 10M Mario Kart DS, More Brain Training and Animal Crossing WW. And to add to that, Super Mario 64 DS and Big Brain Academy are above Liberty City Stories too (and Mario Party DS likely passes it).

@nitecrawler: It doesn't base itself on PS2 architecture (which is actually tricky). PSP has the architecture as the DS has, only that PSP has more powerful interiors.
What's making the cost difference, is that PSP games tend to be home console games on a handheld, when DS games are handheld games on a handheld. So i'd think that PSP games would need a budget closer to Wii games budget than DS games budget.

No 3rd party game has achieved those numbers, was my point. And 3m is nothing to sneeze at.

@Aj Habfan: I didn't mean that the sales were bad, it's just that the company is propably used for the franchise selling above 10M constantly. Whether the sales on PSP is to blame the hardware installbase, but the fact still remains, that in raw sales numbers, sales aren't at the level Take Two would expect it to be. GTA3 with its different reincarnations and GTA4 have each done much better.

1. GTA IV cost what, 100 Million for everything at the end of the day? PSP version was probably a few mill for everything

2. It takes much less time to make a PSP version

3. If they expect the DS version to reach those levels, they are dreaming

So, in other words, you expect upcoming Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars sales to surpass PSP GTA sales, and rival GTA4 and GTA3 ones?

I would expect it to sell well IF the art direction of Chinatown Wars wasn't so damn weird. It probably would do better if it looked like oldskool GTA.

@Aj Habfan: GTA3 and San Andreas weren't nearly as expensive as GTA4 was. The "stories" on PSP propably have been cheaper than GTA3 and SA, but by looking at the top sellers on PSP and the top sellers on DS, you can notice the difference in sales potential between the two.

@Star Scream: I don't expect it to sell in those numbers. There's no particular reason for it not to, but GTA haven't been even remotedly as successful on handhelds, as it has been on home consoles.
