Forums - Sony - G4TV: Yahoo is wrong, the PSP is very much alive

Meh, PSP is dead I have one don't use it. When I did use it I spent most my time playing avi files and mp3s on it. or emulating older consoles.

@Sapient: The publishers have very little incentive to put out games for PSP. Developement costs are higher than what they are on DS, which has installbase more than double in comparision to PSP. PSP also haven't really been able to sell games. You can also notice publishers not being happy, when Take Two puts GTA on DS instead of making a new game on PSP, Exit was ported to DS (didn't it have XBLA port too?) and if this continues, we'll see Patapon 3 on DS.

Ei Kiinasti.

Eikä Japanisti.

Vaan pannaan jalalla koreasti.

Nintendo games sell only on Nintendo system.

It won't, Sony owns Patapon franchise.

@sapient

As long as DS has got mainstream games I care about I go with DS. If smth that beyond my interest is selling on DS, I'm OK with that. Why I shouldn't? I should hate those girls and moms who are playing Imagine series on DS? DS demographics and game library literally what I mean by "fun for everyone". If it's small budget, casual != shovelware. About a half of DS game library - "blue ocean" games, which I don't care mostly (there're some exceptions like Rhythm Tengoku), but a whole bunch of other DS games - that's mine demographics, which I do like.

I think developers need to smarten up a bit. Call of Duty 4, Assassins Creed, Ninja Gaiden, Lord of the Rings, etc. on DS but no PSP version? Those games are directly in line with the PSP userbase, and aren't even selling good on the DS.

I will tell you this, EA is one of the only companies that continuously make a PSP port, and it pays off for them.

^probably being sarcastic. The only hope for the psp is more Japanese developers localizing their games. However with lackluster software sales outisde japan I can see why that would be unlikely.

P.S. are development costs on the PSP really that much higher than the DS? I would've assumed since it was partially based off the PS2 architecture that it would be ridiculously low cost and easy since everyone and their mom has experience with PS2.

GTA on DS seems more like an experiment then them not being happy. Grand Theft Auto: Libery City Stories is the highest selling 3rd party handheld game ever I believe. Vice City Stories is approacing 3 million itself.

Worldwide Software sales last week:

DS: 12 million

PSP: 1.4 million

Say what you want about Japan, but worldwide PSP is really struggling to sell games, that was my point.

1. DS is a software monster.

2. PSP sales are virtually untracked in Europe. If we do get data, it is usually added to the overall total, meaning it's sales never make their way into the weekly charts. For example, the 5M sales of GTA which would have been adding up over the past two years were never actually in the charts.

It sold 40,000 more units than the Wii in Japan last week.

But only a third of the Wii's software.

Despite its large install base, game sales are really dramatic.

Only a third of what? PSP is still ahead of Wii in terms of software in Japan.

I agree 'game sales are dramatic', just look at the likes of Dissidia and Monster Hunter in Japan this week...

ConsoleWeekTotal
682,139 (-12%) 28,116,766
266,594 (-18%)

23,496,618

This is from Japanese Chart for Week Ending 03rd January 2009 on this site.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Please, don't compare PSP to DS. DS is just too godly and is too busy doing 2 mil+ weeks of sales.

Just focus on PSP itself, 43 million is pretty good- still higher than xbox 360 and PS3. Also I can't see any reason why over 40 million of sales will make Sony to discontinue any support for it. But it is so easy to pirate games... everyone I know does... Just need to fix that, at least make it a little harder to pirate like DS- just a tiny difficulty will throw a lot of people off.
