Its a mid ship, messing up or going over the line will result in spins. All you need is a big empty parking lot to learn that lil mr2s characteristics.
wider rims, better tires harder suspension, drop it low sway bars and all that good stuff. Would help.
The newest MR2 models are a significant step up in control and driveability. I can't tell you how often I see old MR2s traveling with their rear tires forward on autocross courses. Still, a mid-engine layout is going to rotate more easily, which is both an advantage and disadvantage.
